The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I thought it was going to be a drama?

Do we know what Ronald Reagan junior thinks? Though honestly the daughter is enough, the older son it's kinda hardly to take serious as he once called Ronold junior "an embarrassment" for speculating about their dad having had Alzheimers while president.

He's done dramas before. He was in Stranger than Fiction, after all.

He doesn't look anything like Reagan though. If it was serious, that would matter.

[up][up]Maybe so, but he's certainly not a name you associate with drama. (I'll be honest and admit I never knew he did dramas at all). He is a name you associate with stuff like SNL that isn't afraid to cross the line twice.

Yeah, but doing a movie making fun of Reagan's Alzheimer's? That doesn't really sound like something he'd do, to be honest. It just sounds tasteless, even for him.

[up][up]

And Cuba Gooding Jr looks barely anything like OJ Simpson.

[up][up]Yeah but they tried with everyone else, and since the trial itself was the thing, they honestly were more important than OJ was. Not quite the same thing with Ferrell unless he's only going to be mentioned in passing or something and the real story is everyone else.

It's not like there isn't precedent for actors not even looking like the people they're portraying, but that's besides the point.

A Hosue bill has passed committee to make women in the US register for the draft the same as men. As now that combat roles are going to be de-suggested the previous defence against women not being made to register (that the Do D had judged them not fit for combat, same way that someone in a wheelchair presumably doesn't have to register) is no longer valid.

Amusingly the guy who proposed it did so to try and get women kept out of combat roles. [1]

Cross posted between military/women's issues/US politics threads.

I find that hilarious ironic, considering what his idea about "starting a conversation" was. The conversation was already ongoing, and he was firmly in the "women can't do combat" camp. Fuck you, man.

Still, I've got to wonder how relevant the draft even is in the average American's life these days. It's not like they pulled the draft for this whole goddamn thing in the Middle East.

You still have to sign up for it, but after Vietnam, no one actually expects it to be called for anything less than WWIII. If the government tries to call the draft for anything less than something that threatens the survival of the United States itself, people will not put up with it. There would literally be riots in the streets.

Besides, the United States has the most powerful military in the world by far already... They don't need to pull in untrained civilians for anything less than World War III, and even then, all the US would need for that is nukes, not soldiers. There is literally nothing that would threaten the survival of the United States from an outside force that would not also threaten the survival of humanity.

I would consider Communist Aliens to be one of those outside forces that could threaten humanity if they invaded Earth. Because they are Commies from Space.

So apparently John Boehner has referred to Ted Cruz as "Lucifer in the flesh" and says "I have never worked with a more miserable son of a bitch in my life".

He says he'll support whoever the Republican Party chooses as a nominee except if it's Cruz . . . though he's still hoping a contested convention could nominate Paul Ryan.

That was completely uncalled for. I've watched Lucifer, and he is a lot more charismatic than Ted Cruz could ever be. I would certainly vote for Lucifer Morningstar before ever voting for Ted Cruz.

I once read a short story in which a politician made a Deal with the Devil to get himself elected President without resorting to mudslinging, personal attacks against his opponents, and other negative campaigning tactics. It didn't work; not even the Prince of Darkness could pull that one off.

But by the end of the story, Lucifer had decided to run for President himself.
