The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[up][up][up] The Paris Accords are, like most political efforts against climate change thus far, too little, too late at this point in time; that's the big issue with Climate Change; radical change only ever seems to occur when the problem is staring us in the face and people are dying in droves, and in terms of climate change, by that point in time, the collapse of human civilization is already inevitable, and extinction is not only plausible but probable.

[up] Don't be ridiculous. It may very well lead to the collapse of our civilization, but extinction of the human race, really? We are a tough loss and I'm sure a few thousand will find some way to survive. And this is the worse case scenario. More likely we are looking at something like the little Ice Age part 2.

[up][up] The human race can survive the impending ecological disasters of the 21st century, but I'd argue that's contingent on no other major disaster occurring simultaneously. Little ice age part 2 would be the outcome of carbon emissions being stopped overnight, in all likelihood there's going to be no significant movement towards renewable energy until we're well past peak oil, which, if I understand correctly, will likely occur at some point late in the 21st century. At that point, we're in a lot of trouble.

[up] Were likely never going to hit peak oil, they always manage to find some new source. But alternatives sources are already becoming more viable. Solar is cheaper than ever before, Germany is becoming quite reliant on wind, and while the West is stuck in a nuclear phobic funk countries like (cringe) China are leading the way with cheap reactors, and many developing countries are looking to acquire them. The next wave of industrialization will be fueled by these energy sources and not coal and oil. And that says nothing about the infinite resources in outer space that we are only beginning to explore.

[up] What you're giving is the optimistic view on the trajectory of human civilization, which I'd argue is a projection derived from a somewhat anthropocentric point of view. From my point of view, there is nothing inherently special about the human race that guarantees it will be able to adapt and survive any eventuality. It is entirely possible, from my viewpoint, for humans to fail to adapt sufficiently to the changing environment, and thus go extinct like any other species would.

There has indeed been some encouraging developments in other parts of the world regarding modern civilization's dependence on fossil fuels, but the question of whether it will be enough hangs in the air. But either way, this has kind of gotten off the topic of American politics, and I apologize for going off on a tangent.

Frankly, I'm less concerned about whether humans will be around after a climate-change-induced collapse of civilization than I am about who those people will be. It would be brutally ironic if all the city-dwellers died and the rural prepper nutballs pieced together a new society even though their denialism is part of what helped cause the collapse.

Regardless, all we can really do here is vote according to the best interests of our nation and our species — if you give up and abandon the system, you've thrown your hat into the "fuck it, we're all dead" ring.

John Boehner told an audience at Stanford University Wednesday that the Ted Cruz is "Lucifer in the flesh" and a "miserable son of a bitch."

The Republican Civil War rages on.

Regardless, all we can really do here is vote according to the best interests of our nation and our species — if you give up and abandon the system, you've thrown your hat into the "fuck it, we're all dead" ring.

Pretty much this. Political nihilists are part of the problem, not part of the solution. Climate change is an issue and there are many things worth saying on that issue, but a perspective of, "The climate change will kill us all, nothing can be done, humanity is doomed," is just empty doomsaying.

I've heard a lot of that in my life. So far, the Beast hasn't risen, the Mayan Calendar didn't run out the Earth's clock, the Aeternalae have yet to successfully turn all humans into anime girls, and George W. Bush did not declare himself Pope-Emperor of Mankind and abolish elections.

I'll believe the meteor's coming when it hits, thanks. Until then, let's keep the telescopes pointed at the sky and talk options.

[up][up][up][up] Simple. We are smart and can make complex tools. As long as their is some kind of plant or animal life left on the planet, which is certain even after the worse case apocalyptic nuclear war scenarios, let alone a spike in temperature, their will be humans.

I could see a very bad nuclear war wiping us all out. Global Warming might destroy human civilization, but I doubt we'd go literally extinct from it. Unless it sparks a nuclear war.

[up][up][up][up] , [up][up][up] I kind of ended up getting off track, but the gist of where I was originally going was to try to explain why it might not be entirely unreasonable to want to provoke a revolution (ie voting for Trump to remove the possibility of compromise) sooner rather than later.

[up] About the same as they did after eight years of George W. Bush, but even angrier, and perhaps even willing to enact some truly radical changes to the system. That's not necessarily a good thing mind you, radical change could and honestly probably would come in the form of a totalitarian government and/or a Full-Circle Revolution.

I'm not agreeing with these people, just playing devil's advocate here.

There's an overlap between Bernie and Trump supporters. Mostly from the online sorta reddit assholes but it exists.

Overlap between everything exists on reddit, you'll get Clinton-Trump overlap on reddit, it's bloddy reddit and it (like all social media) is not a proper source for what any actual group of people actuall thinks.

From what I understand, Trumpets supporting Bernie as their second-favorite candidate isn't too uncommon. For the most part, this is essentially because they're less pro-Trump and more anti-Establishment, and think that Bernie's a good second choice for breaking up the establishment.

See I've not seen a single source on that, it's pretty much just a meme. I could say that Hillary supporters favour Trump as their second candidate and it woudl have just as much factual basis from what I've seen.

Sadly my own anecdotes now are only of anti-Trump republicans saying they'll simply abstain from voting rather than vote for Hillary due to her gun control stance. A few female republicans I know seem to be the only exception.

Speaking of my area, here's a "funny" one that doesn't have any online documentation available to my knowledge. After a recent boom in solar farm construction here (a win-win for everyone, as impoverished farmers have been negotiating some pretty sweet land rental/lease deals with the solar companies, who themselves supplement the TVA with clean energy), climate change denialists and tea partiers in town and community governments in many small towns in western NC have recently issued bans or moratoriums on construction of additional solar farms, claiming that it's a government conspiracy to "suck out the sun's energy" and to " poison the air with electromagnetic radiation."

Check the URL. It will give you the post number you were supposed to be taken to. There's 25 posts to a page, so you should be able to find where you left off.

Won't help you right now, of course, but for future reference it's a viable workaround until the bug is fixed.

[up][up][up][up][up] Link please. This seems to crazy even for those types.

And on the topic of solar energy, what's the state of the US's solar industry. From my understanding, though Obama claims it's "Cheap clean and American made", it's only the first two, as China makes most of the panels. Mind you that would not put me in opposition to solar panels, to much is at stake, I'm just curious.

Don't have a link, just word of mouth from someone in my state district rep's office and some county officials.

This was a similar incident in another county. Silly quotes aside, there's a lot of resistance from those set in the idea of "The old ways are good enough." They're complaining that the solar boom is eating up farmland while ignoring that our small farmers are profiting more from the solar leases than they would planting crops.

One of my neighboring counties passed an ordinance requiring trees and slatted fences to be placed around a solar farm's perimeter, which caused a great number of headaches since the intention behind it was to block sunlight from reaching the panels and later declare the farms to be "inefficient wastes of money" as a result.
