The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

The American South and Northeast have really big problems with rednecks and racist idiots.

Everywhere has problems with rednecks and racists. It just depends on where you are which group is focus of it.

@Tactical; You say that like it's an actual victory for Sanders. Four out of five pretty much means Clinton is the over all winner for the night and has not, in fact, been in anyway stopped or slowed down.

Plot Twist: Trump is actually the right guy for the job, and was lying about being a petty jerk because he knew it would allow him to become president.
Frankly, the idea that might actually be true disturbs me almost as much as the idea that Trump is sincere.

What's going to make this even worse is that if Trump does win and everything goes to pot, a lot of Sanders supporters will probably say "We could have avoided this if Bernie had won!" and they'll just go the usual "NO SOCIALISM IS ALWAYS BAD" route.

At this point his real motives are irrelevant. He's already caused irreparable damage to the American political system and to the culture at large.

He's kicked a hornets nest of the most violent and uncompromising hard right neo nazis in the country and now they're out for blood and political power.

Yeah that was the argument my father made to me (he's not a citizen so he ultimately doesn't give a damn, but he sincerely thinks Trump is putting on an act), and my argument to him was almost word for word [up][up]this.

I enjoy the political theather on fire that he has made of the US presidential race. And feel pity for the aides that have to craft policy around his wildly contradictory promises.

This election has actually really highlighted the flaws in our electoral system. The superdelegates are corrupt and useless, first past the post voting is stupid...

Are those things that only started this election? Because otherwise I don't see what makes this election highlight them in that regard.

Edit: I mean, yeah, it's a circus, but Hilary is winning and has gotten more votes than Bernie and Trump is winning and has gotten more votes than the other two. Hardly a miscarriage of democracy.

Until this election, neither of the other things had mattered for decades because it was pretty clear from the get go who would take each party's nomination before it even happened.

Really? Despite what it says about us as a country that Trump could run on the platform he has on the (in our scenario ultimatly correct) assumption that being the jerkass reality TV star is the way to the Presidency?

[up]Let me put it this way: him getting elected at all would be disappointing and say a lot of bad stuff about our culture (it's very disappointing to me, but not especially surprising), but in the unlikely joke scenario that Trump was secretly good all along, at least we wouldn't have a complete moron running our country.

So, looks like Hillary is just over 200 delegates away from securing the nomination. That means that even winning about half of California's delegates would put her over the top, not counting the other dozen states that still have to vote.

So, do you think it's time to completely rewrite the US Constitution, replace the entire US Government system, or Civil War?

The annoying thing about Hillary is that I'd been thinking of her as a valid second choice/last resort if Bernie doesn't take the nomination, but with the precedent she's setting for herself as far as dealing with the internet, would Tv Tropes, for instance, survive her reign? I can absolutely see her backing new SOPA-type bills if they became a thing. Granted, though, I dunno how stable or unstable that situation was left. :/

Just have to keep looking back at the utter horrors in the Republican circus to keep in perspective, I guess, but if Bernie doesn't get some kind of cosmic DM fiat or something, it's looking like it might be a depressing four years regardless.

And it is becoming likely that there will be no contested convention for the Republicans... Donald Trump is on the pathway to win enough delegates to win the Republican nomination, especially if he wins California.

For all the talk about Hilary being a "second best" or "last resort" it sort of seems like she' shaping up to just be better for the job than Sanders is.

Like, you can like what you says all you want, but if he can't actually do the things he says, isn't even pretending he can, or worse being willfully ignorant or just lying about what's possible, how does that make him the better choice?

I mean, we have another shining example with Trump with how "not mainstream" =/= "better".

How wide did Trump win? The states in this primary for the most part are not winner takes all, so percentages matter.
