Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

My dad told me today that he had an argument with my little brother, who told my dad that he "just doesn't get it", and that it's not worth talking politics with him anymore.
My brother is a Trump supporter. He also thinks all welfare should be abolished. My dad said that if that actually happens, there would be a massive revolt, so how is that supposed to be possible? My brother... had no answer. Big idealistic dreams, no realistic answers. He's too immature to be 27.
My dad wants Sanders to win, and is a big fan of Elizabeth Warren.
Oh yeah, my brother has an Alex Jones app on his tablet and is a big fan of Peter Schiff, who the conspiracy sites like. Earlier today, I read an article on Cracked about how conspiracy nuts were harassing the dad of a murdered kid at Sandy Hook, telling him he's a liar and that his kid wasn't real, etc. I decided to look up the conspiracy site I used to read ~15-10 years ago, What Really Happened, and yup - it supports both Peter Schiff and Sandy Hook trutherism.
Where are we when we live in a time when a large chunk of the population actually thinks that 9/11 is an inside job (like I used to think), that Sandy Hook was faked, all this stupid shit? And why - is it because of the internet spreading shitty ideas to morons who lap them up because the ideas make them feel special somehow?
I don't understand how people can think that the government would destroy two hugely important buildings or shoot up a school full of kids?
Then again this isn't anything new; I had a history class last semester where one of my classmates's father believed that Pearl Harbor was an inside job.

X3,
Let's try and avoid bringing outside conflict to here.

I don't get how people think a government can do that, yes they're not as incompetent as people joke, but no government is that competent.

advancing the front into TV TropesWe've got a very deep streak of hating the federal government on principle. Combine that with the long history of idolizing violent citizen militia groups, no real nationwide crackdown on them, the meme of facts being subjective, and assorted other problems.
Basically we've got a lot of real nasty cultural memes that we haven't worked out.
Oh really when?Cruz losing all 5 states is actually heaven for me. I want him to suffer a Humiliation Conga.
Non Indicative UsernamePlot Twist: Trump is actually the right guy for the job, and was lying about being a petty jerk because he knew it would allow him to become president.
Leviticus 19:34

The alliance reinforces the narrative that GOP is rigged against Trump.
