The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

So an activist group in Chicago alleges that they witnessed auditors erase 21 Sanders votes and add 49 Clinton votes in order to force the audit to match the results for the District, which would be in direct violation of Election law.

(relevant portion at 24 minutes, with the actual allegation dropping at 30 minutes).

I hate when Trump talks about things like increasing taxes on the wealthy because it reminds me that there are some parts of his ideas that I like.

Like, I might actually be willing to consider voting for him if his running mate is an old schoolmarm with a ruler whose job is to thock him upside the head any time he tries to talk about or make policy regarding women and minorities.

The thing is Trump's totally lying about that. We've seen his plan, it gave the most savings to the 1% (although was easier on lower brackets than other GOP candidate plans).

[up] Well, he's totally lying about something. It could very well be that his tax plan was put out that as an attempt to reassure the GOP establishment that he's on there side, while he intends to do something entirely different while in office. Which isn't particularly reassuring; Sanders' having extremely consistent rhetoric is a pretty big anomaly when it comes to politicians, but nobody else even comes close to Trump in terms of contradicting themselves.

It's genuinely possible that Trump didn't even read his tax plans.

A group supporting Hillary Clinton says it will spend more than $1 million to “push back” against attacks made against the Democratic presidential front-runner and her supporters on Twitter, Facebook and other platforms.

Correct the Record, a super PAC dedicated to defending Clinton from “baseless attacks,” said it is pouring the money into the so-called Barrier Breakers 2016 digital task force. The group said it will more than triple its digital operation “to engage in online messaging both for Secretary Clinton and to push back against attackers on social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook, Reddit and Instagram.”

That seems like an idea that will fail miserably. Young people on the Internet already make fun of Hillary for not knowing how to engage with them, and this is just gonna make it worse.

Funny how none of these people were saying how historic President Michelle Bachmann would have been back in 2012.

The identity politics over Hillary is ridiculous. I'm Jewish but that doesn't mean I'm gonna vote Sanders just so I can have a Jewish President.

Retired Marine General James Mattis declared he has no plans to run for president in 2016, despite a campaign by conservatives to draft the retired four-star general as an alternative to Donald Trump

Another blow to the No Trump Movement. No white knight is coming to save the GOP from the orange-skinned menace.

It'd have been historic all right, assuming some books survived the end of it to tell the tale.

Rule of thumb, you should probably focus on how historic something would be after you've determined if it would not suck in every other way.

But, yeah, Bachmann would have been historic, and that probably would have been played up if it happened.

She was also the VP candidate, only to be president if something happened to Mc Cain. Clinton is gunning for the top position herself.

Plus a year in and this is the first article I've seen about this particular subject? *shrug* I don't think anyone wants to beat that particular drum too much.

[up] I was talking about Michelle Bachmannn[1], not Sarah Palin.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio (D) could face legal trouble for "willful and flagrant" fundraising violations, a head investigator for the state's Board of Elections determined.

That was Palin in '08. He's talking about Bachmann's run in the GOP primaries in 2012.

Given how many people were in that race, and that she got knocked out fairly early on, I guess not a lot of people considered she'd get close enough to the nomination to be any kind of revolutionary.
