Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

What prevents Trump from crossing into "evil" territory here?

Oh God! Natural light! That he didn't vote against the Sandy relief bill, for example. And had actually some somewhat nice things to say about New York values during that debate where Cruz first mentioned the term.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanTrump's evil, just not to the same extent.
Think of it this way: Trump is Hitler, Cruz is Satan. Hitler's direct, in your face, up-front. He rallies hate groups and openly espouses horrific views.
Satan is subversive. Insidious. He sits next to you in a fancy suit and goes, "Wow. That guy, amirite?! Gotta do everything we can to keep him out of power and hey, it's your lucky day. All you gotta do is sign."

Hitler seemed a lot like the latter to many people, though.

Oh God! Natural light!@Fighter: It's a response to the article Septimus posted about foreign leaders being scared of Trump. Europe and Asia in particular terrified about Trump sending the US into isolationism, and leaving them to deal with Russia and China all on their own. Oddly enough the Gulf States are quite calm about the whole thing. It's worth noting that the major Western European states are less panicked, in general countries that have spent longer amounts of time analyzing American politics are less convinced Trump will win. Still they resent being characterized as freeloaders and bad allies.
I Bring Doom, and a bit of gloom, but mostly gloom.
Isn't he the one who said that blacks were brining Heroin and crime to Maine?
John Kasich: DC shouldn't become a state because it's residents would vote Democrat
He isn't even trying now.

Isn't the whole point of D.C. not being a state so that the other states don't fight about one of the states having the capital? It's the reason why New York and Philadelphia stopped being the capital of the US. Then again, they kinda failed at that too, with D.C. being in the South rather than directly on the Mason-Dixon Line.

Wow, fuck that Le Page prick. Didn't he only win because he was in a three way race? Hopefully his approval numbers are in the gutter.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.![]()
DC was designed to prevent the syndrome of a country's capital taking over governance and convincing itself that it is the nation and all other parts of the country are mere irrelevant provinces, think "Britain is London", or to an arguably more extreme degree "France is Paris." Mind you this has led to us treating the city itself and it's citizens like shit, but in our defense for most of it's history DC was basically a small town with an unusually large amount of monuments. Letting the City become a state, and having all the Federal Buildings become the District of Columbia would not be unconstitutional nor unwise in any way except for the fact it would add one more Blue State to the Union.
It matters because Physical Stamina is apparently offended by the fact that there might in future be a state in the South that isn't deep red and considered ignorant hicksville? I exaggerate but it does seem like a stupid stance to take when it is in fact, physically in the southern region of the nation. Technically in the middle, as that was the reason it was chosen at the time.
In any case there's also Puerto Rico which has three political parties right now, The Us Virgin Islands which appears to lean strongly democratic, and American Samoa whose people don't even get to be US citizens, they're US nationals which is a distinction I don't quite understand and as far as I'm aware many find to be insulting, especially as many there also serve in the US military.
Frankly, if people are going to be wonks about the population issue, the Dakotas could in fact be merged and I doubt it'd change anything. South Dakota appears to have only Mr Rushmore and ghosts.

Hey, look, LePage said something ignorant and dangerous. Next thing you'll tell me is that it's Thursday.
