Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Even with a majority, Republicans can't pass a budget due to infighting over objectives. /sigh
I wonder if Democrats could do it if they had a majority...
As for the bathroom controversy, we've noted that the number of documented cases of harassment or abuse by transgender individuals in bathrooms is exactly zero, whereas same-gender abuse is way more common than Mr. Cruz would like to discuss.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Re Democratic budget: Not unless the Democratic Caucus becomes a lot more homogeneous and less fearing for the re-election of its members. Which would require some major political shifts.

The democrats had similar problems during the early days of Obama's administration, particularly over the ACA.
Admittedly it was a bit different because that was because of conservatives democrats as opposed to radical leftist, as opposed to the Republican's problems with the reactionary wing of their party, though that may change in the short to medium term I think.

There aren't that many conservative Democrats left; they got purged in the 2010 midterms.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"
What does that have to do with anything? I can't figure out where these left-field proclamations of yours come from.

I've made this joke before, but if Trump wins, Canada's going to need to build a wall over their southern border to keep out all the Americans flooding into their country and taking their jobs.
I wonder if Trump will be willing to pay for it.

I meant that given the general political trends and Sander's success that it is possible we could see the Democratic equivalent of the Freedom Caucus emerge. Admittedly that probably isn't something that is going to happen in the near term.
This bit from the Cruz article jumped out at me.
I don't know how all High Schools are, but the showers were only ever used by the Wrestling teams. Gym classes in the middle of the day don't have a showering period, at least at the one I attended.
"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"In my high school some kids shower in the locker room after swimming sessions.
Non Indicative UsernameHere in Switzerland in our high school equivalent they were used also after regular PE at times.
Having said that, while they were unisex I find Cruz's implication that all teenage boys are potential predators questionable and highly insulting.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanTed Cruz, like many in the conservative movement, is projecting his own insecurities onto the general public. Gender segregation is cultural, anyway; it's not an immutable law of nature. If you raise boys apart from girls and tell them never to look, and vice versa, then when they do get a glimpse it'll cause way more problems than if they'd been raised together from the start.
Same basic idea, but yes.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"In some cases it's not so much insecurities as it is fantasies that they're projecting, they assume that folks would sexually harass other because that's what they'd do.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranPoint is, gender segregation is the primary reason why the problematic "Women are Unicorns" phase of male development even exists at all. Because we raise boys in an environment where girls are rare, mysterious, nigh-mythical creatures, boys grow up with that mindset.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Conversely, we raise girls with the expectation that boys want them primarily for sex, leading to several toxic memes:
- Girls view their social value in terms of their sexual desirability.
- Girls view all men as potential sexual predators.
- Girls learn that they can get what they want by manipulating the sexual desires of men.
A related consequence not found in all groups is that girls believe that their own sexuality is shameful.
This isn't the LGBT issues thread, but my understanding is that transgender youth are not typically allowed to begin reassignment until they reach their majority, and, regardless of the preceding, that a transgender girl who is still physically a boy would continue to use the boys' facilities, for practical reasons if nothing else.
That people like Ted Cruz would interpret anti-discrimination laws as saying that a boy can get into the girls' shower by claiming to be transgender is just so completely wrong that it hurts my soul.
My hatred for that man cannot be overstated. Trump may be a racist, narcissistic, xenophobic con artist, but Cruz is evil.

Any group who acts like morons ironically will eventually find itself swamped by morons who think themselves to be in good company. My hatred for that man cannot be overstated. Trump may be a racist, narcissistic, xenophobic con artist, but Cruz is evil.
Are you my sock puppet?
Good to see he's gotten comeuppance for his bastardry in NY.
Also, I am not sure that gender transition should necessarily be put off until majority, but that is really territory for LGBT issues threads.

Ryan says he doesn't have the votes to pass a budget
- apparently, a fight about spending levels and Ryan cannot pass a budget with Democrats because of policy clauses that no compromise can form about.
Trump terrifies world leaders
. Not related, but still worth noting, the UK has recently issued a travel warning
for LGBT people going to the US.
Cruz slams transgender bathroom controversy
- very much pro segregation there and also criticizing Trump for calling it a non-issue. I note that bad things can happen with grown men w/ young and older boys.
