Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I imagine a significant portion of those people are also people who either don't vote or vote for third party candidates on principle.
Probably, and I don't think it would go as well as you think it might, Trump is nothing if not unpredictable, and more importantly doesn't care whether or not what he's saying reflects a popular opinion, or even has any basis in reality. Not that it would impact the election at all, Trump is still Trump, but he might at least get the pleasure of making Clinton look like an idiot. Not that I'd expect it to go much better, if at all were Sanders the nominee, though I doubt he'd try to accuse Bernie Sanders of taking "bribes" from him like he'll almost certainly do to Clinton.

People have been making fun of her for over a decade. I think she can handle him.
She has a lot of experience with cheap shots, personal attacks, and scandalizing.

Well, obviously she'd win in the end, but Trump claiming that she (off recording) agreed to support some bill or something in the senate in exchange for contributions to her campaign could be a bit difficult to respond to, if only because he'd be "admitting" to doing something that would incriminate both himself and his opponent on camera, albeit in a way that would be pretty much incapable of going to court, for obvious reasons.

I mean, there was someone claiming that there was evidence from the DC madam sex scandal that would have "an impact on the primary", people were hypothesizing it was either (Bill) Clinton or Ted Cruz, even though the former would be a bit of a "water is wet" moment. I won't be surprised if Bill Clinton's sex life becomes a political issue again for the next 4 to 8 years.

Inter arma enim silent legesOh, I knew that. It just seems more political opinion than difference in theory.
Which, I guess I didn't mean there's not difference in practice (obviously, there is), it just seems like neoliberalism in practice was a bastardized implementation of economics motivated by interestingly bad politics. Maybe?
(Vox, Yglesias) Sanders' politics are still the future of the Democratic Party
Sanders this cycle still basically has won 55 to 60 percent of voters under 40, across all racial and minority groups, who increasingly want a party further to the left than many of the prominent mainstream Democrat politicians want to take it. And I'm willing to bet a fair number of those people are also already 'settled down and have a family, house and car''.
And the thing is: The people backing him at rallies and providing him donations are basically the middle class / middle management insurgents you need to rewire systems.
That last article though emphasizes that Sanders need to pivot a bit to non-presidential elections with his campaign. Which would need a bit of gymnastics but may just work.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanHis role as an insurgent force in the party is definitely not over. We certainly need a populist movement to primary incumbents who have drifted too far into the neoliberal camp.
I wish.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"I'm not sure a Clinton vs Trump debate would go as bad for Trump as you think. Really, at least where I am, people hate Clinton, and Westchester is supposed to be a bastion of Clintonism. Trump is a master showman. All he has to do is style himself as some sort of average guy speaking truth to power. Combine throwing out some patronizing sexism to discredit everything she say, I expect a lot of "sweeties" on his part, and you could potentially get a lot of people to like Trump based on a debate against Clinton. Once those two clash my friends will never let me here the end of every "roast" Trump gives "Shrillary."
I Bring Doom, and a bit of gloom, but mostly gloom.
As someone else from Westchester, I can only assume that you're mainly talking to the Republican electorate if that's the case, or millennials, though I doubt overt sexism would go over particularly well with them/us. I imagine he'll be fairly patronizing, but in fairness, there are very few politicians who aren't frequently patronizing, and neither Hillary Clinton nor Bernie Sanders are on that list.

It's not like it's an open primary, however if there was registration switching like we've seen before then that's shady. Regardless the DNC and RNC should be doing a better job telling people how the primaries work, because that message clearly didn't get though.

I'm torn.
On one hand I remember "Gush and Bore" and spoiler Nader.
However I also remember people claiming that Hilary's PUM As would lead to President Mc Cain back in 2008.
I think there are a lot of variables to consider in whether there will be mass dissent in the Sanders camp. Including whether Sanders will endorse Hillary, who Hillary's opponent is, and how many in the #Benieor Bust camp would have voted Democrat in a normal election.

Any group who acts like morons ironically will eventually find itself swamped by morons who think themselves to be in good company.![]()
That's kinda irelivent isn't it? By that logic Republicans should always win the presidency as they normally win the most states by raw numbers. It's votes that sitter, too geographical areas.
Sander's will endorse Hillary, he's already said that she's far better then any Republican, even if some of his supporters do a nut he won't.

I hope so. I can't wait for the first Trump-Clinton national debate. Do you think he'd show up?
