The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Hanlon's Razor guys; it could be simple logistics issues at play.

This. There's no excessively-long lines or anything, and New York has never had both Presidential Primaries at once before - it's always been settled on one side or the other (or both!) by the time it reaches us.

Edit: Though apparently, NYC is having some rampant issues, including a possible 120,000 voters experiencing the "My affiliation was swapped without my knowledge!" thing that Arizona ran into.

Bernie Sanders' campaign called reports of voting irregularities in New York "a disgrace".

You know, given what's happened in Arizona and New York, I half expect some big pushes for voter ID from Republicans in the next few years, using those fiascos as an excuse. (I'm a little surprised they haven't started already.)

Any chance the Dems could counter with a push for universal, automatic registration?

Forgive me for not having read through all these articles, but what does voter ID have to do with the current primary issues? Are there accusations of impersonation fraud? ID won't solve problems of people's registration information being incorrect or lost.

Hey, lack of evidence for voter fraud and disconnection of the ID requirement from any actual problems didn't stop them from pushing it anyway (and in my case, succeeding before pushback from the courts). It's just a bullshit pretext; don't think too hard about it.

[up][up] Various Democrat and Independent voters have been turned away due to either not registering in time in NYC or other situations like that. People are finding themselves unable to vote because the system is so confusing and no one knows what's happening.

CNN just called NY for Trump based on exit polls alone. Clinton and Sanders are far closer.

Kasich is doing better than expected.

Cruz is honestly at risk of not getting any delegates tonight.

Is New York one of those states that hand out delegates proportionally?

I believe both the Dem and GOP primaries have a 20% threshold.

All the Democratic states do that, the GOP is somewhat proportional but is also based on congressional districts or something.

[up]You need 20% of the vote to get anything, which in a two horse race isn't that hard.

I may have spoke too soon about Kasich, despite taking Manhattan he's now now has under 20% of the vote.

Trump currently has over 70% of the vote.

I'm close to certain that the threshold is actually 15%, at least on the Democratic side.

CNN calls NY for Clinton. About 60:40.

Well, there is almost no way for Cruz to legit overrun Trump now, so you better hope for an RNC fastball at the convention.

If it comes down to Trump vs Hillary I'll vote for Hillary, but otherwise I'm going for Sanders. If someone other than Trump wins the Republican nomination but Hillary wins I'll vote Republican.
