Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Isn't Osama from Saudi Arabia? You might be able to hit them with some kind of charge related to that if they knew this guy was dangerous but didn't take reasonable precautions.
Maybe it's actually a brilliant plot to stop the US from being dependent on Foreign Oil.
Leviticus 19:34Sigh. 9/11 is never going to end, is it?
I hope Trump wins NY by a landslide.

THE TRUMP TRAIN HAS NO BRAKES!
I wonder if Hamilton's
newfound popularity contributed to this.

Any group who acts like morons ironically will eventually find itself swamped by morons who think themselves to be in good company.
In fairness, NY's rules to swap existing affiliation is onerous (one of the few times I'll ever agree with Trump's campaign), as you needed to do it 6 months before the Primary itself in order to be eligible. I've been Independent until March, so I can't vote today, and I've got a Republican friend that would've liked to vote for Sanders, but he obviously can't.
"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"At least Pennsylvania set the deadline for primary party registration in mid-March, so I was able to get mine in. I still don't know why my previous registration showed me as unaffiliated, though.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"It's been an open secret that Saudi Arabia funds Sunni terrorist groups, including al-Qaeda and the Taliban, for years. Allowing US citizens to sue them over the 9/11 attacks is probably legally valid, as giving money to terrorists who then does terrorism with that money would certainly make the Saudi government share legal responsibility for that terrorism. In real terms, it's basically a political stunt and almost certainly won't amount to anything, though.
Really from Jupiter, but not an alien.![]()

The legal soundness of the idea of suing a nation for its sponsorship/abetting of terrorists aside, it's entirely symbolic as there is no way to compel them to pay. Really, all we'd be doing there is officially declaring to the Saudis that we are willing to break our political and economic alliance with them over it.
Looking at the numbers, if Trump walks away with at least 77 of New York's 95 delegates, it will become mathematically impossible for Cruz to walk into the convention with a majority of pledged delegates.
Then we are almost certainly headed for a contested convention, or Trump will have the nomination locked down (unless the RNC opts to go nuclear and override the primary results of course).

Or Cruz could steal enough delegates from state conventions to force a contested convention even if Trump mathematically wins 50%.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"As someone pushing frivolous litigation, methinks. I don't know about the US government funding the IRA.
~Rationalinsanity: As well as a threat of riots and of Trump pulling some revenge stunts.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanThe Saudi government didn't fund AQ directly though, it simply allowed it to be funded by private citizens and looked the other way as terrorist ideology was spread and support trumped up for terrorists. That is petty much how the US reacted to the IRA, including refusing to extradite the people who helped fund terrorist attacks on the UK.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.The field is wide open if we allow it at all. It might make governments more accountable, but in reality it'll just make a lot of money for lawyers and increase international tensions for no good purpose.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"So I've been following some news coverage, apparently there are mishaps happening in New York during the primary? Things like people being mailed the wrong papers and the like?

Had a customer today who wasn't informed of the Primary polling station, which is different from the general election one for him and his wife. If she weren't affiliated with the poll system (she usually works, but didn't get the certification in time for the Primary), they wouldn't have known where to go to actually vote in the Primary this year.
"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"

Well Saudi Arabia did actually have some complacency in 9/11, mainly in looking the other way and allowing its citizens to do crazy shit, I belive Bin Laden also got some funding from there and Saudi Arabia did play a big role in pushing the ideology that lead to Bin Laden.
Basically Iraq and Afghanistan were smoke screens, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia were in many ways the big financial and ideological backers of AQ.
