Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Any group who acts like morons ironically will eventually find itself swamped by morons who think themselves to be in good company.![]()
Probably about the role of state and protection. Although EC conveniently skirts around the entire scenario which the US went through (i.e. there is no more state control in the general area), and the concept of emergency laws and powers.
Otherwise an interesting perspective.

Si Vis Pacem, Para PerkeleIt is worth pointing out that it might not be timely for such a game, though I wouldn't quite call it Unfortunate Implications.
The main characters aren't really Designated Heroes. They really aren't much worse than a Good Karma Fallout Protagonist or a Mass Effect Spectre. In fact, I'd argue their actions are more justified than either, since unlike the former they have authority from an elected body and unlike the latter they're only being given that power due to a legitimate emergency (mind you, a legitimate emergency comes along, but you're certainly not given power because of it).
Having said that, I love Extra Credits and thought this video was thought provoking even if I disagreed with it (I guess an inverted Don't Shoot the Message, if you will)

Leviticus 19:34
Keep in mind the game was made by a Swedish developer with a French company (Ubisoft) as the publisher. Europeans probably have a different perspective of this sort of stuff. Though, I do find it hypocritical that nobody complains about foreigners being killed by Americans all the time in movies and video games (Especially with Europeans, primarily British and Russians, being the villains in them all the time), but whine about a game where you play as a American killing other Americans.

That's because you're killing US civilians. Killing combatants of a nation you're at war with is generally fine.
In those game's you're usually a soldier, but in this one you're essentially law enforcement (technically, you're military being used as law enforcement).

Leviticus 19:34Over 39,000 Verizon workers are on strike, and Bernie Sanders is joining them.
Quick, all candidates, swoop in while he's not working! The time to attack is now!

Leviticus 19:34Bernie works for Verizon?
Also US people killing foreigners in games absolutely comes up, as a topic of controversy, Yahtzee for one always hated that about some American games. Also fighting the Russians isn't nearly as absurd as it used to be ,thanks to Putin

A question: what's middle school over there in the States?

On empty crossroads, seek the eclipse -- for when Sol and Lua align, the lost shall find their way home.Clearly, we must ban Republican primaries.
Middle school? It varies by jurisdiction, but generally grades 1-5 or 1-6 are considered "elementary", 5-8 or 6-8 are "middle", and 9-12 are "high". Some facilities merge middle and high and are known as "secondary" schools.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"
How should they elect their nominee, then? Duels to the death?
I could get behind that. It would be the best kind of reality TV: the kind where a racist, corrupt, and/or stupid politician dies for our amusement.
And before you ask, "Which one is which," the answer in most cases is "both" for any contest that involves two or more Republicans.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Yeah I can defiantly see my pears becoming more openly racist thanks to Trump. For what it's wroth I'm pretty sure most of them are just "trolling." But they do this within earshot and sight of several Hispanic students. And it just gets really annoying to talk to them in general.

x5 — And it has to be a "last man standing" type of contest, where the winner of the first deathmatch then has to fight the next guy, and so on, until there are no more challengers.
What to do with the last one, though? Any ideas?

This Space Intentionally Left Blank.Let 'em win the contest, sort of like in Hunger Games. They'll know they're a tool of their own system soon enough.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"

And yeah, Republicans are definitely spinning him into a commie. My brother's used false equivalency of how socialism won't work for us by citing Venezuela and the Soviet Union, two countries that horribly mismanaged their "socialism" and that was why they were poor.
