The General US Politics Thread

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Hillary Clinton and surrogates make yet another wildly misleading claim about Sanders, this time via statistical falsehood.

I wonder if anyone is really surprised at this point.

Any demographic has more assaults in restrooms than trans women. There have been a grand total of zero reports of trans women assaulting cis women in a bathroom.

I'm honestly surprised only three Republicans have been arrested for that. Not just Republicans, really—I would have assumed that any random demographic would have more than three arrests. It's just a ridiculously small number when you take into account the entire country.

The answer is security cameras. I'll bet ten to one the number of people who are bathroom peepers is far far greater than the number of politicians who are bathroom peepers, because most buildings where politicians work or visit have cameras...and politicians usually will know it.

What happened with the Republicans is simple:

The Republicans lost control of Congress around 2006. This was due to the growing unpopularity of George W. Bush. It went to a head in 2008 where they were facing electoral near mass extinction across the country due to George W.'s administration being accredited to the collapse of the U.S. banking industry and his shitty response to it.

With huge majorities of Democrats everywhere, the Republicans were fearing mass extinction. The Republicans had, up to this point, basically been running Congress roughly since 1994 give or take and didn't want to let go of their vice grip.

So Mitch, the leading Republican Senator, enforced a policy of making Obama the most unpopular president in history and making him a one turn president by any means necessary. Fox News, which basically serves as the propaganda arm of the Republicans, followed in tow by caricaturing Obama as fundamentally un-American. The Koch brothers followed suit by AstroTurf-ing the early Tea Party protests.

The Democrats due to a combination of Obama's empty Senate seat, a corruption scandal regarding the Chicago Governor selling said seat, AND Al Frankin's seat being in near constant limbo due to electoral headaches, lacked their projected Senate super majority to pass major legislation unopposed by the Republicans.

Obama and the Democrats tried to pass bills, but Mitch to try and take back the Senate and position himslef as a serious Republican, whipped the Senate into opposing all legislation as to earn brownie points for the 2010 primaries.

Basically what happened is Mitch and Fox and the Kochs followed a policy of absolute opposition. They energized untapped voters for years, and fed them propaganda that the Democrats and Obama were doing something that had never happened when Obama is probably one of the most boring. Average. White Bread. Middle of the Line. Democratic Presidents to ever get elected. (In the sense he does a lot of fiddling, most of his big stuff is purely boring technocratic policy wonkery)

And it just kept escalating. Mitch needs to keep opposing or be declared a RINO by the untapped voters he and the Kochs and Fox have politically gaslighted and psyched and made hysterical, because they keep feeding that the Democrats are trying to do things that are somehow fundamentally UN-AMERICA-BURGER.

When they're mostly doing really mind numbingly run-of-the-mill policy wonk legislation.

Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker says any talk of him being Donald Trump's running mate is shocking and breathtaking.

John Kasich dismisses Trump VP talk: 'Zero chance'.

Trump might find himself in a situation were nobody wants to be his VP. Sorta like Mc Govern in '72.

[up][up][up] It is rather ironic that the Bush-Era Republican Party has now lost control of their own voters to such an extent that not only will they be denied the Presidency and lose both the Senate and the Supreme Court, but this election could destroy the very Republican Party itself.

As happy as I would be to dance on the Republican Party's grave, I have the sinking feeling that they're saying the same thing on their forums, only about the Democratic Party.

Probably.

I think Shinra also made the point a long while back:

The GOP's pro-business/moderate wing basically proved itself incapable of being trusted due to the disastrous end of Bush Jr's presidency.

By failing on that end, it probably damaged the ability for Republicans to get that cross party support they probably benefited from for years.

Wouldn't that be the sick joke? The death of American bipartisan-ship is because a relative moderate President (Dubya, and don't tell me he wasn't, he essentially was for American politics) crashing the economy killed trust in moderation.

[up][up] The difference here is that if Bernie Sanders is denied the nomination by the superdelegates, it will be because Hillary Clinton won the majority of the Democratic primaries, just not an absolute majority. You cannot say that about Donald Trump in regards to a brokered convention.

Well, on the forums I go to, most people are disturbed by the popularity of Trump, but happily support Cruz. I don't think anybody's seriously suggesting the Democrats will fall apart, however. They do think that just about anybody could beat Hillary, except Trump.

[up] Then you evidently don't spend time on Free Republic. The majority of the users are convinced that anyone who isn't Trump is a RINO cuck.

Though at least they haven't banned Cruz supporters yet like they did with Giuliani supporters in 2008.

Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) said he wants the Republican nominee to be a conservative and Ted Cruz is the only candidate who qualifies.

Donald Trump on Tuesday slammed the chairman of the Republican National Committee (RNC), claiming the party's system for selecting its presidential nominee is a “scam” and a “disgrace.”

In the latest tremor from the ideological earthquake wracking Republicans nationally, conservative icon Phyllis Schlafly says the board of the advocacy group she founded 44 years ago is trying to oust her for endorsing Donald Trump.

The GOP Convention is gonna be such a shit show.

So apparently Sanders won Wyoming by 12 points but still got less delegates than Clinton. There's a lot of people up in arms about that. That's bullshit if true.

Actually, they both got the same amount of delegates. Not sure how that is justified mathematically, though.

Also, Poll: Clinton, Trump rolling in New York and Poll: Trump holds large lead in New York. Seems like New York will be a state for the front-runners.

Unless you've got a source that says otherwise, that's due to all four of WY's superdelegates endorsing Hillary.

Yeah they have even delegates unless you're countering super delegates, and if you're counting super delegates then I'd question your understanding of the primary process and if you're trying to be factual.

Now the fact that the delegates were split evenly does seem a bit weird, Clinton seems to have got the delegate that's contested between the two of them (as in if each delegate is worth an even percentage of the vote then one of them isn't wholly won by either of them) despite the fact that you have to round up a lot less for Sander's to get to the required percentage then you do for Clinton to.

Basically I think the system works based on winning country delegates. Split the number of state delegates by the number of country delegates and 20 country delegates equal one state delegate. Clinton has 124 country delegates so is entitled to 6 and 1/5th state delegates, while Sander's has 156 country delegates so is entitled to 7 and 4/5th state delegates. Yet for some reason they get seven each instead of 6 for Cointon and 8 for Sanders? Anyone know why?

I am confused. Since the presidency is going democrat this election with close to 99.9% probability, doesn't that usually mean that the house and senate are going to get more republican? Is there some reason they won't?

Coattail effect. When people vote down the ballot, a lot of them go by party rather than individual (since a lot of the time, the individual is not known to them). Said coattails are not always so long, but they will be this cycle for sure.
