Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

With secession, I'd argue that it's everyone's right to fight against unjust authority if they don't have another option. However, it is immoral to oppose just authority.
This means that secession will always be illegal, because a just ruler will rightly defend their rule, and an unjust ruler won't care. But theoretically, it can be justified.
Leviticus 19:34The unraveling continues.
Any group who acts like morons ironically will eventually find itself swamped by morons who think themselves to be in good company.I believe secession in Canada would be legal if it happened. The last time it came up, what basically happened is there was a big Canada wide vote. It was close, but the slim majority decided to keep the country together.
Because those pushing for it really didn't want a split to actually happen, the vote never came up again.
Also, when Canada split from England, that was totally legal as well. We asked for permission, I believe.
Gee, that's a helpful and insightful summary of the reasons behind the rise of Scottish nationalism and regionalism in the United Kingdom.
Oh no wait, it's a cretinous oversimplification.
Bernie has won a state with fewer residents than my hometown in Scotland, slashing Clinton's delegate lead from 212 to 212.

Schild und Schwert der ParteiThen how do the Scots know that Edinburgh won't do the same to the rest of the country?
The pattern seems perennial. Paris, Madrid, Stockholm... "Those stuck-up jerks from the Capital treat us like we're beneath them!"
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.No that's Westminster, the boroughs outside of Westmisnter and The City get the same treatment.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranI thought secession was about "We make more money than the rest of the entire country, why are we letting them decide what to do with it?"
Of course, that's not supposed to reflect all secession movements, but about enough of them, or why some people (that is, the people with money) would support a secession movement.

That's really not true of Quebec. Some of them are "our culture is so awesome/different that we want to leave so we aren't stifled."
Granted, you do get cases like Quebec where one of the parties constantly threatens to leave, but they mostly only use it to get concessions since actually leaving would be a disaster.
Actually, they have that view in the Shetlands, which is historically and culturally closer to Norway then Edinburgh. The Islands only became part of Scotland in 1470.

Pretty much what's happened to Quebec by now. The rest of Canada is kinda just tired of their shit at this point. Even the people in Quebec are tired of their politician's threat to succeed. Quebec separation hasn't been a real serious thing in a decade now.

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.If you've ever wondered why talking politics makes people so angry (especially when your friends and relatives have differing political beliefs than you), now you can find out, courtesy of DNews.
TLDW: Partially epinephrine (adrenaline) making you less rational while norepinephrine dulls physical and emotional pain during the moment. Partially our caveman brains trying to sort people into tribes (also our brains trying to make sense of the fact that the familial "tribe" doesn't necessarily correspond to the politics "tribe").
Also, politics can counter racism. Score one for politics.

In the novel Shogun, we had the following exchange:
In other words, you only get charged with treason if you lose. But if your revolution or secession is successful, you can justify it however you wish.
