The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

(NYT, therefore 10 article a day limit) Editorial on the Republicans allowing anti-LGBT discrimination in the name of "religious liberty" at a time when LGBT acceptance is obviously on the rise nationally.

And the Republicans who are promoting them are playing a short game, not a long one, by refusing to acknowledge a clear movement in our society toward L.G.B.T. equality, a trajectory with only one shape and only one destination.

They’re also playing a provincial game, not a national one, and scoring points in their corners of the universe at the expense of the Republican Party’s image from north to south and coast to coast, a brand that needed a makeover — remember the broadly ballyhooed “autopsy” following Mitt Romney’s 2012 defeat? — and somehow didn’t get so much as a tweezed eyebrow or dab of blush.

What happened in North Carolina is a problem for Republicans atop the major trouble (Cruz, Donald Trump) that they already had. It exposes divides within the party that are ever more difficult to paper over and contradictions that aren’t easy to explain away.

So I kind of want Trump to win the Republican nomination, just so he can lose in the general election. ;p

It would be such a grand finish. To have come so far with such momentum, and then to lose in the end.

Not getting the nomination would be anticlimactic, but seeing him become president would be, wow, yeah, scary.

You gotta believe me when I scare you away, all that I wish for is that you would stay

Even if they do hate Bernie Sanders, not being a US citizen means they have no control over whether or not he gets elected to office. So that whole article really seems kind of pointless.

See, I do see these LGBT bills as a product of partisan redistricting. The redistricting process distorts the way opinions held in the voting populace translate into opinions in legislatures.

Ditto for Post Offices, if he extends that to Money Orders.

As for Wisconsin, I figure that Walker's administration would push Democrats to vote for Bernie due to how hard-lined Walker has been with Unions, while Sanders is pushing to give them some of that power back.

I hat Bernie so much! Oh, when he sees the ball cap and fedora collection I'm about to give him he'll have second thoughts about running for office. He'll find it more fulfilling to be a hat model. And he'll be the best damn hat model that ever lived.

Kasich will drag on until Cleveland. His whole campaign is built around the idea that only he can defeat Hillary and that the world can be a good place. But this year's GOP crowd is not into (pseudo)moderation.

It should be noted that it is mathematically impossible for Kasich to reach the delegate threshold needed to secure the nomination at this point. There simply aren't enough delegates left.

He's saying in until the convention.

An independent ethics watchdog is calling for a formal investigation of Florida Rep. Alan Grayson, a Democrat running in a contested primary for retiring Senator Marco Rubio’s seat.

That doesn't mean that Kasich can't win at the convention through a process of rodent coitus on the part of the RNC, though.

Eh she did pass that bill that kept rapists from claiming parental rights. Not sure how that shit was ever allowed, let alone why it was allowed while gays weren't allowed to adopt, but priorities right.

[up]I'm going to guess it was a technicality. After all, a rapist is still, biologically speaking, a parent, so if there Ain't No Rule against it, they'd be able to claim parental rights.
