Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

North Carolina Residents Terrified After Hearing State Passed New Law

On a serious note, I wonder what it would take to finally bring down the backwards ideologies of the South. There will always be revisionists and idealists for something, but then, I remember the horrifying statement that we might need a President Trump to end this nonsense...
To be fair them Nazis have a sweet sense of fashion.

Non Indicative UsernameAlthough Trump claims that he will eliminate the US debt by the end of his second term.

A tiny part of me wants him to win just so he is proven wrong about everything. The majority of me says "fuck that shit" though.

Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.Jesus was a Jewish Socialist. Bernie Sanders is a Jewish Socialist.
@Handle: They need to prove that they're more important and more capable than each other. And thus, more deserving of funding.
Plus, there's often areas of overlapping responsibility and places where information's compartmentalized when it shouldn't be. If terrorists arrange a cyber-attack on US infrastructure from both inside and outside the US, then the FBI, CIA and NSA all have responsibilities for the case and they all want to make the big bust.
(And don't get me started about the ATF versus FBI hatefests.)
Sadly, even that is unlikely to dissuade his supporters. Trump would find a way to blame someone else for his failings, and his supporters will swallow it. After all, if their god is perfect and their perfection hasn't happened yet, surely it must be vile forces at work?
There's a serious problem with the Right in America where they believe it is impossible for their beliefs to fail, only for them to be failed. This ties into the other issue where facts are subjective in American politics
Complete and utter collapse will do nothing to change their mind. They're reality proof.
Oh really when?Complete and utter collapse caused by them getting what they want should wake up a lot of them.
Bear in mind, for instance, that many of the most non-religious countries on Earth are ones that formerly had a state religion that couldn't behave itself.
People have a funny habit of changing their views when their views blow up really badly. (insert comment about my Peter Schiff and Alex Jones-worshipping brother here)

I wouldn't call Jesus a socialist. He was ascetic and concerned for the poor, but these don't necessarily imply socialism, nor are they incompatible with capitalism.
Some news:
Sanders leads Clinton by 8 points in Wisconsin
and Poll: Cruz leads Trump by 5 points in Wisconsin
. Mind you, these are polls. Further, the next state is New York which seems to be much more pro-Hillary and pro-Trump and is a much bigger cake than Wisconsin.
Supreme Court upholds 'one-person, one-vote'
. Unanimous decision that total population can be used as a standard for redistricting rather than eligible population.

IIRC, when Jesus said "Give unto Caesar that which is Caesar's", he was talking about giving taxes to a pagan occupier. Of course, it can be taken as a given that taxation must be at least tolerable as they are necessary for the existence of a state, and it's probably safe to say the Bible isn't fond of anarchy.
But as for Republicans, I think you're underestimating their intelligence. From what I've seen, it's not especially common for a conservative to agree with religious fervor with absolutely every conservative policy. But I could see Ted Cruz having disagreements with him, especially on immigration. Trump would suddenly burst into flames if they entered the same room, however.
But the ultimate problem with "if Jesus were in modern politics" is that everyone who does so necessarily imposes their own views onto him. No, I'm not an exception to this.

That's what we wanted, right?
Yes (for the court ruling, half so for Wisconsin's polls). Although overturning Vieth v. Jubelirer
is still something that I consider necessary. Given Kennedy's caveat in his concurring opinion and Scalia's death a well reasoned argument may convince the court.

After a contentious vote on Sunday, North Dakota Republicans elected 25 unaligned delegates to send to the Republican National Convention this summer in Cleveland, offering a presage of the confusion and chaos that seems certain to unfold there if the party remains unable to unite behind a nominee.
Any group who acts like morons ironically will eventually find itself swamped by morons who think themselves to be in good company.
