Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Does the FBI being able to hack iphones now count as politics?
It's not exactly surprising to anyone paying attention. Just look at the history of jailbreaking. If you're willing to spend enough and have people who know what they're doing, you can always find a way in.
The good news is that the FBI didn't manage to get their precedent, so Apple can just patch the vulnerability, same as always. Yawn.
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlayAnyone with enough time and money can hack a computer device... No security is completely secure. The point of Apple's argument is that companies should not be forced to provide backdoors into their own programs. The difference between what the FBI asked Apple to do and what the FBI actually did is the difference between having a skeleton key for every lock so as to open any door and picking the lock to open the door. The FBI having a warrant to break into an iPhone and using hacker methods to break into said iPhone is perfectly reasonable.
Wizard Needs Food BadlySo in one of the weirdest Primary twists so far, Bernie Sanders may have just won the Nevada delegate caucus by virtue of Hillary's appointed delegates (AND alternates) not showing up to cast their vote
. And an alternate site that seems to be a more local paper in Nevada
. The regular caucus results still stand, but more of the delegates in attendance voted for Sanders as their preferred nominee, tipping the 12 that will be appointed in May towards Sanders over Clinton.
The final delegate count was 2,964 for Sanders and 2,386 for Clinton. That means the Sanders campaign will send 1,613 delegates to the state convention, while the Clinton campaign will send 1,298.

"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"Caucuses are multi-tiered, which lets shenanigans "win" a caucus even if the street-level voters chose another candidate. It just puts several layers between the public vote and the people who are sent to the convention, as opposed to regular primaries where the delegates are chosen by the voters directly.
@Librarian: What freakouts? I think you're just blowing reactions out of proportion a tiny bit.
Anyway, caucuses just sound so complicated to me. I mean, just voting for your preferred candidate is no muss, no fuss. Caucuses appear to take a literal whole night of your time. I'd really prefer it if we could just replace all caucuses with preferential voting and such or something. (I live in Texas, all I had to do was fill out a ballot and I honestly don't know if I'd have the energy to attend a caucus because that sounds like a goddamn circus.)
@Jack, I think ironballs was using primary to refer to the whole thing going on, not Nevada in particular.

Librarian said "a number" which is more than one. And since the Greenpeace thing doesn't seem to have made it to the big news channels I don't think many people care about that particular incident. (Generally if things get onto the big news channels it's going to have more of an effect on her.) Frankly I watched that thing and it didn't seem all that bad to me, because a freakout to me indicates a panic.
Also, insulting Bernie more? When he's her competition? Well yeah, that tends to be a thing in political contests and she's not even getting that bad. (Granted, this opinion may be skewed this year because of the Republicans to which we'll inevitably compare the Democratic race.) If by insult, you mean continuing her general point about Sanders' plans that she's been saying the whole time anyway. dd
Greenpeace thing was picked up by Wa Po, at least. Don't know about cable news in that regard, because cable news is largely vapid garbage that I've long since stopped watching. Most people get their news from the internet nowadays. Only people whose main source of news is cable are grandparents, at this point.
GM: AGOG S4 & F/WC RP; Co-GM: TABA, SOTR, UUA RP; Sub-GM: TTS RP. I have brought peace, freedom, justice, and security to my new Empire.I always saw Clinton as confrontational. I just thought that was a good thing. In moderation and with some self-restraint, that is.
So I'm not so concerned about her getting confrontational exactly. But yeah, I can also see why some might be concerned about her losing her cool, if you're going to be confrontational you should maintain face and self-restraint or it makes you look weak.
Wait, they could've done that before? That's fucked up.

Police in several US states can simply seize money if someone has enough, the person is assumed guilty until proven innocent of having the money for nefarious purposes, they have to prove themselves innocent to get it back. It's the same logic as the "if a women has three condoms she's a prostitute unless proven otherwise" laws.

Any group who acts like morons ironically will eventually find itself swamped by morons who think themselves to be in good company.

What I read is that the suspected Israeli company approached the FBI with the offer to hack the phone. Not the other way around.
