Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

If the Republicans continue to be asshats about the Supreme Court nominee and Hilary wins I'd like to see her nominate Sanders, especially if the Democrats get a majority. Just to be mean but also it would be a nice consolation prize to Bernie and his followers and firm up her left wing.
Trump delenda estYeah, nominating someone with no legal experience makes a mockery of the system. It's something I'd expect out of Trump, not a democrat.
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's Play
The joke here is that it is a stab at the whole "Emperor Obama" complaint from the Republicans. The Supreme Court is the only branch of the federal government that is equal to both the President and Congress and is also a lifetime position. The only way to replace a Supreme Court Justice is for him or her to either retire or die. Even though it is sad that the late Justice Scalia died, his Supreme Court Justice position was one where he had to retire or die to be replaced.
From what I know Obama has some minor law experience, but less than say William Howard Taft, the last (only?) president-turned-SCOTUS-judge.
Also, Sanders's mega-donor: The Internet
. Seems like this one isn't going to bail anywhere soon.
Funnily enough I think that Clinton would be the most qualified of the three (Sanders, Obama and herself), as I believe she has the most active legal experience. If Sanders somehow gets the nomination he should appoint her, just for shits and giggles.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranSo, a FOIA request uncovered emails regarding Bill Clinton's visit to polling places in New Bedford on the day of the Primary, and it's not looking great.
Emphasis at the end mine.
It would not be the last time Shreve heard from Tassinari on Super Tuesday. “Are there arrangements for voters to still be able to get into the polls? We just received a complaint from a voter who was unable to get near the polling place as it was blocked off because of Bill Clinton’s presence,” Tassinari wrote. “He was unable to vote and will not have an opportunity to go back.”
“Can you call me?” Tassinari emailed Shreve half-an-hour later. “We are getting many calls about the area around the polling places being shut down, per order of the Mayor. This is a BIG problem.” First Assistant City Solicitor Jane Medeiros Friedman confirmed to Tassinari that Mayor Mitchell gave no such order, but Tassinari reached out again once videos of Clinton’s appearance at the polling place surfaced and calls from across the country began pouring in, including one from the Washington Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs, a nonprofit organization providing pro bono legal services in cases of discrimination.
...
“Essentially Clinton was forced to speak that close to the entrance because the MEDIA parked themselves there before 9 a.m. The City did not set that up as a staging area,” [Kristine] Arsenault [the Bedford Mayor's assistant chief of staff] wrote to Treadup Pio in a separate email. “As for breaking the law: I don’t see what others have quoted as the law online. AND—isn’t jay-walking a law? These people that are so concerned about this law should review every law.”
It's rare that an Appeal to Worse Problems gets me fuming, but there it is at the end. Especially considering that Jaywalking was, oddly enough, partially helped by the auto lobby
in an effort to smear pedestrian victims of car crashes
.
