Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I just have to share this thing
. Trump "honest" - really?
The best way for an infrastructure surge is not to pay at all
Well, yeah, borrowing the money to pay for that spending is by far the superior option now.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"I'm confused about our debt and deficit. From what I've heard most of our government spending goes to paying interest on the thing, but I've also heard ours is low for an advanced country, mind you most of the "advanced countries", especially the European ones aren't doing so well right now.
I Bring Doom, and a bit of gloom, but mostly gloom.I'm curious where you heard this, because it's completely false. Google doesn't return any immediate numbers, but you can impute some things.
http://www.usdebtclock.org/
has the current U.S. national debt at 19.2 trillion. The U.S. Treasury's long-term composite interest rate on bonds
is 2.34 percent. That puts debt service at $381 billion per annum; however, the U.S. Debt Clock has a much lower figure of 239 billion. U.S. federal tax revenue is 3.3 trillion, so debt service is 7.2% of our revenue. The federal budget (all expenditures) is 3.8 trillion, so debt service represents around 6.3% of total expenses.

Schild und Schwert der ParteiHeh. He's not telling Bernie to drop out, but he is telling him to start acting like a person who wants the Democratic Party to win in November.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Didn't he just win in Hawaii where it's two-thirds non-white?
It's really the African-American vote where Bernie gets blown out.
I think Bernie is winning among Hispanics too but I can't be too sure.

Bernie's only chance to win the nomination is if Hillary gets indicted by the FBI. If that doesn't happen, he's screwed.
I agree with Krug though, that the Dem Primary is getting ugly.

Any group who acts like morons ironically will eventually find itself swamped by morons who think themselves to be in good company.Didn't he just win in Hawaii where it's two-thirds non-white?
It's also a caucus, where Sanders outperforms
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's Play@Bat: I was referring to financially and economically, not socially or politically. Most of Europe, baring the Nordics of course, but even their Finland is kind of having problems, has a higher unemployment rate than the US, and is growing much slower than the US, and in some cases their economies are actually contracting. I remember hearing that Spain bragged about reaching 10 percent unemployment, a rate that was considered a national crisis in the US. Sorry for not being clearer.
I Bring Doom, and a bit of gloom, but mostly gloom.I just hope that Sanders and Clinton remain on good terms; so that if Clinton doesn't get charged/go into an unprecedented tailspin, Bernie can go to bat for her in the General. If he can get youth to the polls, the Democrats should win by default thanks to Trump being toxic.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.Won't happen again.

Yeah, wasn't that one of many not-so-good things America inherited from the British Empire? Saying "America" loves violence because of dueling isn't exactly accurate, was a broader European thing.
