The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Yeah Jack the thing is, literally none of the Republicans have ever truly spoke about illegal immigrants.

The illegal part is just something they're forced to say for the camera, it's always implied that they're talking about anyone entering the country.

Depends on when you ask them. Vacation/business visas are generally acceptable, as long as they give us their money and leave, and are otherwise politically acceptable; I'm sure that Trump and Cruz would love to ban travel visas for Muslims, for example.

Considering Trump has gone on the record and said that yes he wants to ban Muslim tourists and business people and American citizens who are Muslim but left the country for any reason from entering or reentering the country, I'd say yes.

Wonder what Ron Paul would say if Bernie got the nom? I mean, while he's not as far left as some of us might like, he is significantly to the left of Hillary.

PS: Ron Paul for Republican nominee 2016: Because the smoke-filled rooms were laced with LSD.

Alabama's governor is embroiled in a political firestorm after allegations of an affair with a top aide.

Governor Robert Bentley (R) denies the affair, but his senior advisor did resign Wednesday.

The exchange came as the woman pressed Clinton on taking donations from the fossil fuel industry and asked if she would reject their campaign contributions in the future.

“I do not have — I have money from people who work for fossil fuel companies,” Clinton responded, before calling the rival campaign's claims lies.

What's that supposed to mean? "I do not have- I have"?

Was she going to say "I do not have the option", just stuttering, or is it a weird contradictory word choice?

Yeah I'm not a fan of Greenpeace either. Aside from the terrorist connections, the anti-science bent is ridiculous. Kinda like climate denialism, except more violent and with stronger religious fervor.

Yeah. Greenpeace's anti-science nonsense is right up there with anti-vaxxing in being something the world would really be better off without. (Water fluoridation is a CONSPIRACY!)

About all I know about Greenpeace is that everyone mocks them for some reason. I don't think they've had a lot of news coverage in.... well, a lot of years. What's up about these terrorist connections and anti-science leanings?

Also, yeah, verbal backspacing in an entirely unscripted scenario is something that basically everyone does. So taking a minute to think about how she needs to say a thing isn't actually indicative of wrong doing. It's not really indicative of wrong doing in anyone, by itself.

Karl Rove made the case to conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt earlier tonight that nominating a “fresh face” at the GOP convention could do wonders for their presidential aspirations.

Roger Stone encouraged Trump supporters to rally at the RNC convention in July to prevent the party from stealing the nomination from Trump.

“Go to Cleveland. Come to Cleveland. Don’t let the big steal go forward without massive protest.

I really can't wait for the shitshow that is the GOP convention.
