Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

"The Iraq war was a load of bunk. It was run by losers. Elect me, and I'll wage great wars. Winning wars. Yuuge wars."

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"
But who's going to pay for that? Also the Mexicans?
From how I read it, it's more that Clinton was informed of it while she was Secretary of State, and chose not to pass that information along to, say, the FBI or DOJ to investigate the companies State-side that were dealing with Unaoil. The emails obtained have no bearing on the invasion itself, but speak volumes about what was done in the aftermath to them.
And one thing that I barely picked out is that, in one particular transaction, Unaoil used an inside contact to block a contractor's bid so that they could come to the same contractor and offer their aid.
So not only were they greasing the wheels for various companies, they actually made it so they had to be contacted to grease the wheels, Mafia-style.

"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"Actually, Trump has also shown himself against the Iraq War and very critical of George W. Bush's handling of it. And Trump, not being involved in these events, can easily call out both the Republican Establishment and Hillary Clinton in one swift move. He would be something like "The poor handling of the Iraq War via the corruption of the Establishment on both sides led to the rise of ISIS! If I'm President, corruption like this will never be allowed to happen, and I will also destroy ISIS. Vote for me and I will Make America Great Again!"
Well, I imagine it being more Trump-like, but this scandal fits with Trump's narrative.
Wizard Needs Food BadlyIIRC, Trump was actually supporting a war with Iraq a year before one actually happened.
Leviticus 19:34Hence, "poor handling of the Iraq War" and not "the Iraq War was a mistake," the latter being what I actually believe.

Wizard Needs Food BadlyKasich calls the the promise
by the GOP to repeal Obamacare stupid.
“I mean, what a stupid promise. The base of the party is furious because you didn’t repeal Obama Care. How are you going to repeal Obama Care when Obama’s president?”
...
Kasich’s expansion of Medicaid under Obama Care in Ohio has angered some conservative voters.
Critics say his move neither reduces the size of government nor curbs wasteful entitlement spending.
...
Kasich has also charged that he expanded Medicaid in Ohio on moral grounds, suggesting it helps drug abusers, the poor and the mentally ill.
“Now, when you die and get to that meeting with St. Peter, he’s probably not going to ask you what you did about keeping government small,” he said in 2013. "But he is going to ask you what you did for the poor. And you better have a good answer."
Kasich likely understands that Obamacare is never going to get repealed, and that its repeal should not be promised if Trump is the ultimate result.
Wizard Needs Food BadlyKasich, actually, from what I hear, is a lot more moderate than most Republicans, and has been called a decent guy by many liberals. His main flaw is his love of the gold standard.
My dad told me this morning that he saw a Republican on TV say, "We've been ignoring what the voters want, pulling this 'lower taxes on the rich' crap, while at the same time the average person has been making less and less and having a harder and harder time feeding their family." Not exact words, but that idea. Not that I expect the Republican party to get it.
~Iaculus: What does El Diablo say about abortion?
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanEl Diablo is an awesome Hispanic superhero and his name shouldn't be assosiated with that asshat.
The fact that Trump was pro abortion was thrown about quite a bit at the beginning of his campaign (to show off his supposedly liberal values) but recently he's said some awful stuff about punishing women who go get them. So. Flip flopper of the most extreme. Not that I expect that sort of consistency from Trump; he's all about what gets him attention, what gets eyeballs and news reporters on him. Not ideological or policy consistency.
And in other corruption news, 14 people are accused of embezzling $2.7 Million from Detroit public schools by filing false invoices and keeping the money used for them
.
Trump's abortion position? The usual - incoherent word soup that somehow manages to seriously offend and alienate everyone on every side of the argument while spiking his primary poll numbers even higher. Seriously, check out the transcript of anything he says - the recent abortion punishment fiasco
is a nice starter, as is this interview on his foreign policy views
. At this point, I'd say it's a fool's errand to chart out Trump's exact policy stance on anything - it's only relevant in that the most seriously awful stuff he says is being used as an endorsement by people with far scarier and more coherent ideologies.

What's precedent ever done for us?

Yeah, shaming the RNC aside he's probably gonna piss off a lot of the Republican voter base by revealing the truth that the Iraq war was bunk.
Oh really when?
