Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Mississippi consistently scores dead last among the 50 states in economy and education. (Well, maybe on rare occasions they might jump to 49th, or even 48th.) So no, this doesn't really surprise me... It exasperates and disgusts me, but it doesn't surprise me in the least.
This Space Intentionally Left Blank.Though this abortion gaff has revealed an important statistic to me; that Trump's disapproval rating among women is well over 70%. No one can get elected with those numbers hanging over them; women are too crucial for anyone to win when a super majority of them dislike a candidate.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.Looking at the outline of that Mississippi Bill it just seems more a like a feel good bill for bigots than anything that could seriously last. A lot of it is stuff that's a given (like churches not having to marry gay people if they want) and the rest is stuff that has not chance of making it through the courts.
Seriously, at this point you'd think they'd try new stuff.

Just another dumbass Southern legislature passing bills saying they don't have to listen to the feds. Give it a few months and the courts will smack it down.
And Trump leading the GOP could crush them in downticket races; if those women turn on the party wholesale.

Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.Nothing gets fasttracked to the Supreme Court, it's the court of last resort. If the defendant or prosecutor (I honestly don't know if both can do it) don't like the ruling of the court they're in, they have to appeal at the next highest level. Once you get to the Supreme Court the case has gone through all others already. That's the basics of it, anyway.
@Major Corporations Being Increasingly Nervous: Everything has become too politicized and divided lately, and that divide is explicitly in regards to race, gender, and sexuality. There is no denying that there is a large minority of people who completely support Donald Trump as President. There is also no denying that Hillary Clinton's biggest supporters are minorities and women. This is a large divide that exists and appears to be at a breaking point given the violence of the past few years.
Wizard Needs Food BadlyHillary Clinton to be Interviewed by FBI Director Comey in mere days
Looks like this ordeal is finally coming to an end.
As if the hardcore Sanders supporters needed anymore reasons to be paranoid of the Dem establishment.

Any group who acts like morons ironically will eventually find itself swamped by morons who think themselves to be in good company.A question based on something a teen Republican said to me:
He said that if we raise the minimum wage to fifteen or even ten dollars will kill small business. Now...is this true (and no, I'm not trying to be ignorant, I want to know the truth)?

"Somehow the hated have to walk a tightrope, while those who hate do not."
Potentially.
On one hand, a higher minimum wage means more unemployement, particularly small businesses.
On the other, a higher minimum wage means the largest class has more money, which they'll spend on things like services small businesses provide.
Leviticus 19:34

Mississippi is objectively the worst state by being the poorest and least educated.
It's amazing a bill like this took THIS LONG to be made.
