Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

It's less specific than that: Trump has always been a vanity candidate — he involves himself in the political process, plasters his name on buildings, runs for office, makes grandiose claims about his wealth and education — all of it is a giant dick-measuring contest that he is waging with the world at large.
His current persistence is nothing more and nothing less than his ego refusing to let go of something if doing so might seem to impugn his reputation or his self-image.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"He has fixed his ego on beating the Republican Party at its own game. To run independently would be to acknowledge that they beat him.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Actually I could sort of see how he could rationalize running independently as beating them at their own game. I just don't think he's going to do it since he's doing so well right now. Maybe if they do in fact broker the convention and try to replace him with Cruz. But as it is he's smart enough to realize he's going to get what he wants if he sticks with the Republican title because the pressure is on them to actually listen to what the voters supposedly want.
Any likelihood of Cruz running third-party just to ratfuck Trump?
Incidentally! Rubio is holding his delegates and telling them to stay on with the Anti-Trump Alliance.
And so it begins.
Whoever wins, we all lose. (On a unrelated note, 7 continents (North America, Europe, Asia, South America, Africa, Oceania and Antarctica) is the most amount of continents there can be, while 3 (The Americas, Afroeurasia, and Antarctica with Oceania being considered part of it) is the least amount of continents there can be, right?)

Actually, you can argue that Antarctica is not a continent, because it's mostly ice. Melt the ice away and it's really more of an archipelago. So, 2 continents is arguably the minimum.

I've never seen anybody group Antartica and Oceania in the same category.
Any group who acts like morons ironically will eventually find itself swamped by morons who think themselves to be in good company. What about Central America?
I don't think so - Continents have to have basis in tectonic plates and geology.
EDIT: 3 does appear to be a possible combination.
It depends on how you classify it, I suppose.

I say give them statehood. Puerto Rico obviously wants it, surprising given the long history of independence attempts amongst the Islands people. And as for Guam and the US Virgin Islands, raising their status to statehood would, besides being the moral thing to do, would greatly enhance our pivot the the pacific. At a time when China is trying to force us out of the region, granting Guam statehood would send a clear message that the Asia Pacific is an integral part of our country, and we are staying for the long haul.
Oh for God's sake, if you're going to singulairze Afroeurasia, at least call America 'America'.

...Can we just agree this is going too far?
"Yup. That tasted purple."

Will that stop him from trying anyway?
