Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

The only countries that would have a chance against the United States are Russia (Mostly due to it being very close to the United States via Alaska. Even then, they'd have Canada in their way), China (Who lack air and naval power), and all of Europe combined (Who are allies with the US, and even if the US did piss them off, they don't have any real reason to attack the US, unless you count American bigots who hate Europeans on the internet), and they would still take a pounding. Not to mention almost all the US's enemies are all on separate continents from the US, primarily Asia. The only enemy on the same continent as the US is Cuba, and they are too weak militarily to do anything and relations are starting to improve between them and the US.

Any group who acts like morons ironically will eventually find itself swamped by morons who think themselves to be in good company.Only in our most cynical, pessimistic, life will always find a way to not work out for us scenarios and imaginings.
| Wandering, but not lost. | If people bring so much courage to this world...◊ |It would be nice if the US weren't so condescending and self-righteous about the process. As things are, it looks like Cuba is going to get the Haiti treatment.
Especially the missile crisis.
Edit: And what exactly is the Haiti treatment? Invaded to put your democratically elected President back on the proverbial throne, only to then organize a coup to overthrow said President?

I Bring Doom, and a bit of gloom, but mostly gloom.

I find it somewhat amusing that people are quick to decry the idea of random citizens with guns posing a serious threat to a modern army when most of the US's recent conflicts have been against random locals with guns rather than modern armies — and the random locals have been harder to deal with than the armies. Guerrillas are expensive to fight and difficult to eradicate, and they basically boil down to "random people with guns". An armed populace can't win a stand-up battle against trained soldiers, true, but that's why La Résistance avoids stand-up battles if at all possible.
Of course, that doesn't make the idea of the US being invaded by a foreign power any less ridiculous. Quite frankly, no one has the capability to even try. What makes the US the only remaining superpower is its ability to project military power virtually anywhere in the world — we have the systems in place to move personnel and equipment basically anywhere. No one else can do that. They simply don't have the military power needed to land an army on enemy shores.
Really from Jupiter, but not an alien.
