Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

It's a slow, slow climb out, from the debate about whether blacks really counted as people or citizens, to the debate whether free blacks had a place in America or should get shipped off to Liberia, to accepting Jim Crow as a compromise, to rejecting Jim Crow but inventing the various dog-whistle bogeymen. We've come a long way and it will only continue.
It bears remembering that there are going to be racist nutters in any country if you're willing to turn over every rock to find them, they just stay put most of the time.
That, too.
Slavers, misanthropic frontiersmen, exiled political dissidents, tax evaders, and Puritans. Our founders, folks.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"From previous page: "Former Trump super-PAC director: Donald doesn’t even want to be president"
Interesting article. And that is so something he would do.

They won't care. It would take Trump standing up on a stage at the Republican National Convention and saying, "Ha! I trolled the hell out of all of you. You nominated me for President even though I am the worst possible candidate. Just the worst. Republicans, eh, what a bunch of losers. I'm firing myself, because representing you losers would be the stupidest thing anyone could do. Go let that smug loser Ted Cruz represent you, because he'll do such a great job too. And yes, I'm being sarcastic."

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"New York Governor Andre Cuomo just issued a ban against state sponsored travel to North Carolina to protest their discrimination law.
I was trying to use anti-anti-discrimation, but didn't fully put it in there right. Going ahead and just putting in discrimination.

"We're all paper, we're all scissors, we're all fightin' with our mirrors, scared we'll never find somebody to love."
Note: it's a discrimination bill, not an anti-discrimination bill.
Look what my phone's Reuters app just notified me of:
"Trump campaign manager arrested, charged with battery of reporter" - http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSKCN0WV1TP
I saw that. Misdemeanor battery, but at least it represents some consequence, however minor it may be.

I blame England. Their policy of putting the craziest nutters on a boat and shipping them off to die on some godforsaken rock created Australia and us.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.![]()
Legally, "assault" is the threat of violence upon a person and "battery" is the commission of violence; the root word is "batter".

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"That reminds me of the Special Agent badge
◊ of the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Pretty sweet.
What a weird question. Native Americans have implicit U.S. citizenship, as I understand it, and may exercise those rights at any time. But they have to register as Native Americans in order to claim any privileges that accrue to that status. I could be wrong; most of my knowledge comes from a Mercedes Lackey novel.
Technically, Native American reservations have national sovereignty, but I don't think that anyone seriously believes that warfare between reservations and the United States proper is a feasible idea.
