Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

He is clearly the Chosen One, and Pure of Heart, as prophecized in the Washington Prophecies.

I saw this flowchart
◊ for who you should vote for. Not very charitable, but it struck me as basically accurate.
Yep, that's pretty accurate. Love it.
It's based entirely on extraordinarily loaded questions, though probably not technically inaccurate-it simply doesn't represent all possible views. For example, it's like if I created a flow chart that said "Are women people? If yes, vote Clinton. If no, vote for Sanders".
To answer it's question: I think shit's slightly messed up, and I'd say it's mostly because liberal figures have managed to pander to young people wanting to be "hip", where as conservative figures panders to the more niche demographic of rednecks.

Leviticus 19:34Nah, Sanders is very obviously trying to appeal to young voters. Clinton also, mostly to compete with Bernie, but she's not doing very well at that.
I don't really see a problem with it, it's just posturing to get votes, that's the norm in politics.
Only problem from a conservative point of view I can think of is that they want those votes. But I'm not sure a time when youngsters were exactly as conservative as their parents ever existed except in nostalgic imaginings.

I'm actually probably more conservative than my parents (for what it's worth, my mother is a moderate and my father a libertarian)
Having said that, I'm probably an exception, not a rule.
However, you are correct in that it's not wrong for liberals to pander to young people. I'm actually more criticizing conservatives for not doing the same.

Leviticus 19:34I consider myself more of a Jeffersonian democrat, but also taking inspiration from both progressive thought and libertarian thought, seeing them both as having lost their ways. I consider it leftist for the strong anti-authoritarian bent, but also much more true to the original spirit of America, before it became corrupted by bankers and industrialists, as Jefferson said it would be.
My brand of conservatism is rather pro-enlightenment and more focused on "the future" than tradition. Semantically speaking, this arguably makes me a very weird form of progressive that views right-wing ideals such as capitalism and whatnot "progressive" in a way.

I feel you, my friend, though I'm a little more fascist in my leanings, sans the racism.
Anyways, back on-topic. Is this accurate for how it is arranged in the US:
City - County - State
Washington Time's Drew Johnson may have just been fired for confirming
◊ the Ted Cruz sex scandal story [1]
At the very least some of the Time's claims are obviously fake.
And can easily be disproven. [2]

Any group who acts like morons ironically will eventually find itself swamped by morons who think themselves to be in good company.Cruz: "Trump may be a rat but I have no desire to copulate with him"
So this is how the dignity of the America political process dies: Accidentally implying to your voters you fuck rats.

@The Handle: It's not really that progressive any more, but why lose that progress?
I don't view socialism or communism as "progressive", I'd argue they're both rather regressive (especially communism, but I think we'll agree on that). Meritocracy is the metric by which I would call a system "progressive". Socialism isn't very meritocratic, and therefore not truly progressive.

Leviticus 19:34Has anyone here been having issues with voter registration changing to independent or unregistered? Apparently it's spreading to states other than Arizona. I just checked on mine, and I'm still registered properly, but I'd recommend checking if you haven't already and your primary hasn't happened yet.

so Bernie befriends the a notoriously flighty species of bird on an important religious day while Trump gets attacked by a bald eagle... I think a patten is emerging...
