Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

So, I gotta ask - how did Sanders go from 37% of the vote to nearly 40% by this morning, and who the everloving hell is the "Other" that 2.4% of Democratic voters voted for?
Ah - so I'm guessing the same goes for the Campaign Clown Car that is the Republican Primary, as there was a full 19.8% of "Other" votes?

"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"According to Wikipedia there are several others who appear on the ballot.
Rocky De La Fuente, Martin O'Malley (withdrawn), Willie Wilson, Keith Russell Judd, John Wolfe, Jr.
Basically there are a few no names running who will show up on a couple of ballots in a few states.

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranCompared to the rest of the US, maybe. Compared to Brazil I was completely overwhelmed by the options present. It was the first time I'd drank Dr Pepper in like 10 years, just for one, and I could go eat a different fast food chain every day if I wanted to at affordable prices.
Also I was visiting relatives
Well not necessarily the worst flag in general. It's a pretty decent gay pride flag or Reading Rainbow logo.
Incidentally, for my money, this is the best flag
.

Is that a bear trying to split an atom? Because that would be pretty badass.
That Provo flag is not a flag, if you ask me. That's a shitty piece of Word Art. A flag doesn't need to be pretty or original or even representative, but it does need to be dignified.
Well, considering the myth of "Manifest Destiny", not really. The idea of America has some serious pseudo-religious undertones to it.

Yes, it is. It's from some Russian city that was big on nuclear weapons development.
Although, I'm actually getting the impression from the article on The Other Wiki
that no real city ever existed there and right now, it's a nuclear waste storage site.

A lot of the "other" GOP votes are people who voted early online or by absentee ballot and voted for someone who isn't in the race anymore, like Sen. Rubio.
That's why Gov. Kasich technically finished fourth in Arizona - Rubio got more votes than he did from early/online voters.

In response to the "What can we do about ISIS?" question, there is no simple answer.
Aside from deploying weapons of mass destruction to depopulate all Arab nations, we have to deal with the actual people and either find ways to sort the good/neutral ones from the bad or create a sociopolitical environment in those nations that lets their people do that work themselves.
We are talking about a nation-building exercise of unprecedented scale, requiring decades, millions of soldiers, and tens if not hundreds of trillions of dollars. Of course, there exists no political will for such an exercise.
Edit: It's important to remember that ideological and/or religious extremism is hardly unique to the Arab nations. Remember Y'all Qaeda here at home? Our terrorists and would-be terrorists might not be quite so well organized or funded, but they have the same underlying mentality.
The ultimate solution is to prevent people from being seduced by these ideologies. What causes that seduction? A combination of alienation from their parent culture and a lack of economic opportunity. Fix the economic opportunity and we're well on our way, and we have recipes to accomplish that.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"That's not Provo's current flag - they changed it last January. Now it's a light-blue field with a circle. In the circle is a green mountain over a blue lake (Utah Lake) with the sun rising behind it.
You can see it on Provo's Wikipedia page.
The old flag dated from the mid-'80s and was rated 143rd out of 150 flags by the North American Vexillogical association. They knew it stunk, so they changed it.

The Panhandle. Specifically Marianna. I went to school in Chipley for two years, and I was genuinely worried about people coming after me with burning crosses.
I've already talked about this one story of a guy saying he wanted to beat up a Muslim girl I knew for being Muslim.

Have you any dreams you'd like to sell?

Why were you in Provo? There's nothing to eat in Utah.
Oh really when?
