Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I'm not even talking about prison. Consider this example: I just broke up with my girlfriend. Being a religious person, I go to the mosque and hear the imam blather about how The West is Evil and other such things.
If the authorities would offer me a free psychologist, I might or might not take them up on that, but I don't think I'd go and think "hm they're evil let's bomb the shit out of them"; I'll probably be to busy moping. If, on the other hand, they'd take me to a police station, I'd probably see something in the imam's incitement.
Going after women in a hijab is stupid, it's like going after men with kippahs.
That's offtopic, however (more suitable to the terrorism thread or something, IMHO).
@Greenmantle: They certainly tend to want the cops to crack down on black kids who smoke weed.
@wehrmacht: Indeed, the values of the LDS church tend to sway towards very socially conservative. However, if Trump gets the nomination, that's gonna backfire on him - because Trump isn't credible with the family values crowd or the religious right. He can't even pretend to fit in by the established Republican standards of hypocrisy - he wears his Complete Asshole credentials on his sleeve. That's not gonna fly in Utah.
Also, the LDS church takes charity and welfare very seriously. There's a reason that Utah is at the forefront of Housing First despite being deep crimson, and that might explain some of Sanders' appeal there.
GREATEST POLITICAL UPSET OF THE DECADE IN ARIZONA! CLINTON CAMPAIGN AND DNC IN DISARRAY!
I want Mexican now... but I'm too broke to order any. Sigh sigh.
It's not nearly as widespread as in America, it's primarely attached to Italian deliveries with little acknowledgment of its Mexican origins(save the odd "Mexican pizza"), but I do have a place to order some nice burritos from.

Can someone explain the significance to a backwards Middle-Eastern hick?
On empty crossroads, seek the eclipse -- for when Sol and Lua align, the lost shall find their way home.
That's counting the birds before you caught them. Especially considering ISIS' track record — they were as good as almost gone in 2009, too.
I congratulate my fellow Utahns on their devotion to the civic duty of voting and perhaps more importantly on having made sensible choices with that duty. Trump finished third out of 3 on the GOP side, and if you're going to vote Democrat Sanders is obviously the better choice.
That was the biggest turnout I've ever seen at a caucus, and I thought 2012 (the previous record) had a lot of people. Last night was about double that. Some places in Salt Lake had lines that stretched for blocks, and it took hours to get everyone in to vote. And it was cold last night too (we had snow during the day). That didn't seem to deter very many people. The Democrats said about 75% of their caucuses ran out of ballots and had to print more, even after they had printed more before hand expecting a bigger-than-normal turn-out.
All and all, it makes me proud to live where I live.
If I'm being completely honest, I actually enjoyed the 3 months I spent in Provo. I disagreed with the majority of the people's political views there by default, but they were mostly pretty nice and welcoming people and were never cross with me even when I committed some kind of embarrassing faux passes around them. I'm happy to know they effectively told Trump to fuck off.

It's no secret that prison radicalizes people.
