Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

George Wallace was a Democrat, at least until the election where he mattered where his third-party run did not even matter as the Republican Richard Nixon would have won anyway even if Wallace's votes went with the Democratic nominee Hubert Humphrey. However, what happened with both Goldwater and Wallace was prove to Nixon that there was a section of the South who were completely unhappy with the Democrats recent support for Civil Rights for minorities but would support a Republican if he matched their particular racist views. These two politicians helped paved the way for Nixon's Southern Strategy, of which Trump is the ultimate outcome.
If the Southern Strategy is to be discredited, the Republicans have to lose to such an extent that the Democrats basically have a mandate not seen since Ronald Reagan. Yes, Reagan.
Wizard Needs Food BadlySo getting like 40+ states and super majorities in Congress? Can't see that happening without major demographic shifts, particularly in the House. The US is just too polarized for either party to pull something like that again, unless a Trump-like candidate finally says something unforgivable in the eyes of just about everyone the day before the election or something.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.Weird. I wonder why DeLong was harping on it now.
Anyway, the best way to settle unrest among the resentful masses is to provide them economic opportunity. Productive, satisfied consumers don't vote for people like Trump.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"I thought the article was just part of his research for his upcoming book on the War on Drugs. But just reread it and there's no mention of anything like that.
Utah Governor Gary Herbert (R) has endorsed Ted Cruz for president.
Oregon Governor Kate Brown (D) endorses Hillary Clinton.

Any group who acts like morons ironically will eventually find itself swamped by morons who think themselves to be in good company. Then the Southern Strategy won't die... So long as the Republicans need evangelical and bigoted voters to win elections, the Republicans will continue to cater to evangelical and bigoted voters. In this election, we have seen the reverse of what moderates and liberals should want... The Dixiecrats and Religious Right have basically ejected the Big Business and War Hawks from the Republican Party.
And yes, the best way to settle unrest would be to provide economic opportunity, but it seems neither party's establishment really wants to help with economic opportunity hence why Trump and Sanders have a large voter base.
Wizard Needs Food BadlySarah Palin has been tapped to preside over a new reality court show that would premiere next year.
They are shrinking fast enough that the GOP is finding it harder and harder to win the White House and a lot of Senate seats. Many Bush era staffers suggested that Bush won partially because of his appeal with Latinos (roughly 45%) in 04. And they suggest that if the GOP can't get back up to those numbers they are in for a rough time.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.Ace Of Spades is right. Those groups aren't shrinking fast enough for the GOP to marginalize. Otherwise it would be guys like Trump and Cruz who would have dropped out and either Jeb! or Rubio with the nomination. It is the Jebs and Rubios who are being marginalized from the GOP and the Trumps and Cruzes who are taking it over. It also does not help that these voters are unwilling to have their politicians compromise at all, and vote out those who might try. Those groups are likely to lose the Presidency, the Senate, and the Supreme Court in this election and only have the House to rely on. If they continue refusing compromise, they will lose the House eventually as well. Eventually, those voices will be in a position to be marginalized. The only question is if the Republican Party will remain a major party. If the GOP dies of completely, the Democrats will split into Centrist and Progressive major parties to return things to a two-party system.
Nothing prevents Big Businesses or the Military-Industrial Complex from supporting Democrats, you know. Hillary Clinton is certainly more friendly to both than Bernie Sanders would likely be. Hell, Clinton is likely to win the election just because people don't want Donald Trump or Ted Cruz anywhere near the nuclear football.

Wizard Needs Food BadlyOh, good. Let's shut 'em down.
It seems to me that any concerns about Hillary potentially sharing confidential information on an unsecure network would be overshadowed by the fact that these assholes posted the same information on the internet for the world to see.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Hey, Wikileaks, way to not take sides. Or maybe that's the bias of the site reporting it. Funny how the hard left has adopted the Clinton character assassination tactics of the hard right.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!""Cruz: "This is a war"" - http://www.reuters.com/news/video?videoId=367833988
Link is to a video re: Cruz responding to the Belgium attacks. Reason I post it is because he refers to ISIS as "radical Islamists" and I'm trying to remember whether or not that was always a democrat thing. Especially in light of Cruz saying "we need a president who will fight this evil and call it by its name."

And surprising exactly no one. That's how hemp was outlawed, give it an exotic sounding name and let racism do your job for you.
