The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Except for complaining that "Obamatrade" doesn't give tobacco firms access to these "investor tribunals", as I recently found out. But yeah, election year, the Turtle doesn't want to put any of his incumbents in danger (omission bias says hi) etc.

Isn't that exactly what he's doing with this Supreme Court obstructionism?

Is there any kind of punitive action that could be brought against McConnell, even if there's no chance of it happening?

No, and no.

The Republican Party's more afraid of its constituents revolting if they do anything to compromise with Obama than if they fail to govern. Hence the current clusterfuck. (And the people who want to get anything at all done are mostly rallying behind Trump right now.)

Well, you can try to boot McConnell again in 2020. And there are a fair few senators up for reelection in 2016 that can also be removed.

Mitch being about tobacco is actually justifiable given that he's from Kentucky where a lot of the growers are.

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) has the most popular tax plan of any White House hopeful from either political party, according to a new survey.

About 23 percent of respondents like the Democratic presidential candidate’s tax strategy best, according to the Wallet Hub/Survey Monkey poll released Monday.

Bear in mind that the survey didn't release its exact questions, but based on the remainder of the results, it seems likely that they didn't provide respondents with a copy of any candidate's tax plan in the course of questioning. Ergo, people went with the gist of what they knew of the plans, unless they had deep knowledge of plan specifics. A plurality of perfectly reasonable people said "don't know", probably because they didn't have enough information to make a decision. In the end, what this tells us is that, among people who believe they have enough info to choose between candidate tax plans, Sanders comes out on top. This probably amounts to people relating Sanders' plan to more general ideas like "tax the wealthy more" and so on.

Maybe they should just accept reality as it is and drop aspirations to the presidency in favour of fixing their House conference.

So, it seems like only Asia can truly be considered Eastern. While Oceania is as far East as you can go and connected to Asia via New Guinea, it is closer to the Americas and Europe culturally and politically than Asia, and Africa is also considered Western despite areas of it leaning closer to the East culturally and politically.

So Hibiki Oni dropped this quote on the Venezuela thread.

"Estados Unidos vendra a dialogar con nosotros cuando tenga un presidente negro y haya en el mundo un papa latinoamericano."

- Fidel Castro 1973.

The United States will resume dialog with us when they have a black president and the world have a Latin American pope.

So now Obama is on Cuba having a nice trip.

You think the US will give up Guantanamo, the base not just the prison, to Cuba, now that ties are improving? Personally I don't see it, if only because Cuba will make a huge spectacle of it and put up a museum of American war crimes on the site of the prison, along with a memorial to the "victims." The US government will now allow that to happen as long as it is possible to prevent such a scenario.

New add attacks Trump by slut shaming his wife. Ordinarily I would never think Slut shaming is okay, but this is Donald Trump. If I had the opportunity to keep Hitler from being elected by calling Eva Braun a ragging whore, yes I know the relationship was never acknowledged to the public, I would do it. Funnily enough though the attractiveness of Trump's wife and daughter have been cited by some of my friends as reasons to elect the man. Worth noting of course all those friends are boys in high school.

You realy need better friends Jack. As for Chuba and the US's bit, the best one can hope for is the Cuban government to be willing to take the US's rent money again instead of turning it down on principle.

[up] Eh their good dudes, just not the most intellectual, though most have me beat in Science. And I'm pretty sure they were just joking about voting for Trump because his wife is hot. Though some want to support him for other reasons, mostly disgust at Hillary's supposed corruption. The vast majority though want Bernie to win, but have accepted that that is impossible.

The fact that we had Guantanomo while having literally no relations with Cuba for fifty years always sounded very strange to me. But I think Obama's trying to shut that down for good now that he's in his last year. Probably not going to give it back to Cuba, since it can still serve as a military base. (And was, originally.)
