The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Seems unlikely that a newspaper would print the word "fuck", personally. I doubt it's real.

I'd be even happier with a meaningful move against Wall Street, instead of toothless lip service displayed so far

If Dodd Frank is toothless, how come bank profits are down? How come banks are getting out of the investment buisness? How come they want to avoid being classified as systemically important? How come they disproportionately donate to Republicans now?

The Obama Doctrine, which I got out of that article a couple pages back that lists which world leaders Obama likes and hates the most.

It's actually extremely interesting, though also very long.

Is South America considered "overseas"? I know that is used to refer to Europe, Asia, Africa and Oceania in the US, but what about South America?

[up][up] Regardless of the technical definition of the term, Mexico counts as "exporting our jobs to other countries" from the point of view of political rhetoric.

Because anything south of Texas is South America. We are not dealing with highly educated people. Plus, if you start pushing the distinction, they will accuse of you of sophistry — or would, if they knew what that word means.

Anti-intellectualism is very much a virtue among a lot of people. Especially in the South.

Their ignorance and often bigotry is a big point of pride, not a problem or a failing to be solved.

Meanwhile, anyone paying attention to Obama's visit to Cuba? Kind of curious what you all think about it.

[up][up][up] About time. Relations should have been normalized around the time the Cold War ended. For god sakes we had Presidents visiting the Soviet Union and Communist China before Cuba.

I just saw a notification come up on Facebook about the registration deadline for the Pennsylvania primaries. What do you know, I hadn't chosen a party. Whoops! Fortunately, I could use the online form to change that; I hope it's in time.

I still can't decide whom to vote for. I expect Clinton to win, and I will back her, but I want Bernie to stay in the race, so I might strategically vote for him.

Does Sanders's tax plan have realistic mathematics? I know Trump's doesn't but I don't remember about Sanders.

As for the Pennsylvania primary, assuming that I am allowed to say this I'd probably vote Sanders to keep the pressure on. The longer Clinton has to emulate his political positions, the more likely she'll stick to them, or at least not immediately flip flop back.

[up]The consensus is no. It's a nice road map but there's way too many places where Sanders has to assume a little magic happens.
