The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Rubio may just be quitting for now, he said he will be a private citizen come January, not forever.

Clinton is playing the same game Obama did in 2008 too: win big in a few states and lose small in others. I can see how he'd relate to that.

I dunno. I think the Hitler comparison is waaay too flattering to Trump. Trump is like an evil Mr. Bean, I think Hitler at least had talent as an orator.

Hitler was at least ideologically consistent, unlike the flip-flopping incoherency of Trump. Say what you will about national socialism, at least it's an ethos.

Kind of? I mean, I don't believe Trump has any true devotion to an ideal, just to saying whatever will grab the most attention and stroke his ego the most at any given moment. Hitler, now there was a guy with ideals. Really, really crappy ideals, but at least he had conviction.

You better perform better than just winning a seat in Arizona, I hope. 2018 is more likely than not going to be a tough midterm election under a (more likely) Democratic presidency. An one or two seat advantage in the 115th Congress is not a sufficient cushion.

[up][up]So did Mussolini. The man's quotes are like something out of an anime Social Darwinist, with all his talk of lions and jungles. Or from a Rudyard Kipling novel. But the man had vision and tried to live out some kind of High Fantasy epic saga. Trump's epic vision is a Vegas casino.

That's why every time I hear Trump called a fascist, I find it insulting to fascists. He's to fascists what Mc Donalds' burger is to a proper burger: all of the bad stuff, with none of the actual flavor.

But, frankly, besides that cosmetic aspect, they're both the kind of shits that'd make a big deal of how the world's competitive and dog-eat-dog and purely meritocratic as long as they're winning, then blame someone else for all their own failures and cry out that life's being unfair to them.

Holy shit.

I think I just accidentally described the Arab world.

Fuck.

Of all the Republican Senators we could vote out of office, McCain isn't even on that list. Not close. Hell, he's one I'd rather see stay if there's any hope of the Republicans returning to sanity.

Sanders suggested that if President Obama were to in any way endorse cuts to Social Security, he should be primaried.

President Obama then proposed chained CPI, which would have effectively raised social security from 65 to 70 in exchange for slightly more liberal ACA provisions. The threat of primarying is what caused him to back off from that negotiation.

[up] Is that supposed to make me like the man more or less?

And unfortunately for Mc Cain their is no hopes for Republicans returning to sanity. I just think the man deserves to die in his seat and not suffer a final humiliation, plus I like his policies on defense spending. Honestly I kind of wish the Republicans would keep the Senate just so he could stay on at that post, but of course the Democrats must retake it if we are to have a chance at good governance. Such are the winds of fate.

With Mc Cain is there not the possibility of him getting primaried? If he's has to do a write in run the seat might go blue.

Cutting Social Security is probably the worst thing a Democrat president could do. Even President Reagan decried ever doing that.

McCain has been working at reducing the influence of the Tea Party movement on the Arizona party, it's been commented on several times in this thread. Unless some pro-Trump faction succeeds at bringing out a large number of anti-immigration voters, I think he's safe in the primary.

Honestly I think all the Democratic praising of him has been so he can ether be primaries by someone crazy, so that the Republican can destroy themselves even faster, or to demoralize GOP turnout so they can seize the seat for themselves. Politics is a ruthless business indeed.

Is Arizona closed or open? I could see Dems going over to keep him in if Trumpists tried something, if its open...

[up]Its one thing to be cutthroat, but to be cutthroat to no practical benefit isn't good politics. Mc Cain is a warhawk, but is otherwise rather moderate and Dems need as many friendly faces as they can get in the Senate.

Generally when people propose raising the retirement age, they do it in stages so that the exact thing you mention doesn't happen. eg, if you're older than 65, nothing changes; if you're 60-65, retirement age goes up by one year, if you're 55-60 it goes up by three years, and if you're younger than 55 it goes up by 5 years.

[up]The cuts in themselves amount to years lost of payments. Chained CPI would have disqualified millions of previously eligible seniors.

Obama Budget Cuts Social Security By $200 Billion, But Gives The Pentagon Twice That Much

President Obama has proposed enacting chained CPI, which would reduce spending on Social Security benefits by $200 billion over the next ten years. This has provoked outrage from progressive groups, and from groups representing seniors and veterans (whose benefits are also impacted by this change).

I'm not quite understanding the hate for Garland - even if he's not as liberal as certain factions might like, he's far more liberal than Antonin Scalia ever was. The fact that he doubles as a "trap" for Republican Congresspeople is just a nice bonus.
