The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I'll vote for Hillary over the GOP nominee, but I don't blame a lot of people for not liking her. Between her spotty record and the way the DNC has been shilling for her, I get why a lot progressives are mumbling under their breath.

The Federal Reserve left its benchmark interest rate unchanged today and lowered its economic forecasts after a turbulent start to the year in financial markets and lackluster U.S. growth persuaded the central bank to reassess the timing and magnitude of its plan to raise rates.

x5 [up] "Consciously or not" yeah, right. If you go to r/Politics, and check the recent history, the last month was filled to the brim with Breitbart and Fox News articles about Benghazi, her e-mails ( dear God, her e-mails), voter fraud, Nancy Reagan or some other manufactured controversy.

And that's excluding straight-up conspiracy theories like Hillary being a George Soros shill, e.t.c.

[up] r/politics is a freaking joke, and not remotely representative of the American public, or really of Sanders' supporters.

Reddit is reddit, using it (or any other social media platform) to measure what supporters of a candidate believe is madness.

That's why I keep asking for actual proof that Sanders supporters are actually doing/believing the things that it's said they're doing/believing. Because soi far it looks like a self perpetuating meme based of what some people on reddit are doing.

[up][up]It's not so much relevant due to media bias as it is relevant due to the Republican Party actively hating its front runner, while the Democratic Party likes its own. There's not going to be a floor fight at the Democratic convention. There might well be one at the Republican convention.

The part I found relevant was the idea that Bernie had to give up now but Cruz didn't (whereas Kasich really is going for a contested convention).

Now Florida Governor and most-likely-to-win-a-Voldemort-lookalike-contest Rick Scott has endorsed Trump and does not quite disagree with Trump's "Muslims hate us" comment and Trump is promising riots if he's not the nominee. God, just listening to recaps of what comes out of the man's mouth is making me sick.

Rick Scott isn't a Voldemort lookalike, he's Lex Luthor made into a real person.

Anyway, the CNN article didn't mention it, but he actually got kicked off MSNBC's "Morning Joe" for refusing to answer the question. The video is glorious. (Skip to about 2:05 for the relevant bit.)

I hate Rick Scott more than is probably healthy.

Better put the National Guard on standby then.
To stop white people? What are you, a socialist?
There are plenty of very legitimate reasons to dislike Clinton but nobody can deny an undercurrent of sexism with a lot of the hatred she gets.
Which was the main reason I posted the article, despite not agreeing myself with all of its points.
the way the DNC has been shilling for her, I get why a lot progressives are mumbling under their breath.
There is a definite feel that the party leadership is being underhanded in pushing for Bernie to drop out already so they can hand her the crown. She is qualified, but the actions of the DNC are cronyism not well hidden. It's clear that Debbie Whatshername doesn't care about getting the best Democrat into the nomination, or about getting any Democrat into any spot except Hillary into the Presidency.

Debbie Wasserman Schultz. Again, she was only named DNC chair because of her essentially having a Rolodex of funding names and contacts.

I am very, very nervous about what the election has in store for us. I'm praying that Trump, bless his pigheaded heart, picks Palin or Carson for VP to scare us Dems even more.

Some will depend on the running mates they pick. Clinton could get Virginia if she picks Tim Kaine, or perhaps make a competition out of Texas with a Castro.

[up][up][up] Some of Bernie's fans insist the worst is behind him, now that he has cleared the most "conservative", and I can't help but not this seems to be said with a hint of elitist derision Bernie would not approve of, parts of the Democratic electorate, namely the South. Personally I say if he can't win decisively in the rust belt he can't win anywhere.

Edit: After seeing the depths of hatred that exist at my school, and around this forum for Hillary Clinton, and seeing as Donald Trump is, well Donald Trump, I predict neither candidate will be able to govern effectively. Clinton may have a few accomplishments here or their, adding some new stuff to Obama care. Most of her accomplishments will be in the field of foreign policy, something nobody gives a shit about. Hell she may have great triumphs their, but in the end she will be the same as the man her husband defeated, a person beloved by nerds unable to appeal to the common man, and only running as a connotation of a more popular President, she will only last one term.

Trump will at best be stymied at every term and make an absolute ass of himself on the world stage. He will became for us as Boris Yeltsin was for Russia. An embodiment of all of our nations worst stereotypes that will not go away. He will only last one term, ether swallowed up by an America turning to the left, or overthrown by the same wave of hate that brought him into office, replaced by somebody even crazier.

All and all it will end with the whole house of cards crashing down to lay bare the broken husk that is the US political system. I don't expect the Constitution itself to survive my lifetime, and in some ways I want it out of the way already.

I trust the feds more than I trust private interests when it comes to certain areas. Weapons production and R&D, utilities, some banks, cable and internet companies, etc.

It's socialism for the rich and capitalism for the rest of us in Britain

Not US, but just as relevant here. The double standard the "free market" ideologues have is pretty blatant. It's almost like they're making up just-so stories.

[up][up]Speaking as someone who has no particular aversion to conservative Dems, it is factually correct that the lion's share of delegates in prior states were from ones in which the Dems are more conservative than the party at large, and that the lion's share of delegates in future states are from the ones in which the blues are very blue.
