The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

So, with that "Lion's Guard" thing... someone royally fucked up and proved their point by threatening the guy's kid.

Someone just DM'd me a photo of my child's school front accompanied by a "I'm coming for him" message. I'm closing this account until safe

Way to prove their goddamned point, Internet Tough Guy.

That assumes that the guy didn't just make the entire thing up.

I am still more "what" at the fact it is a goddamn Lion. Insanity was already expected. But come on. Why not an eagle? 'Mericans like eagles, right?

I mean the only way a lion makes sense is if it is a Mountain Lion wearing a toupee

But mountain lions are actually dangerous and clever.

Eh. Pretty much everyone got lions on their shield in Europe, so it's not that weird. Still, you'd think that they'd go with something more thematically appropriate to their cause. Like a bison. Or a duck.

At least there used to be Lions there.

Huh, so that's why Google was confused when I tried searching for Lion Guard.

And I'll agree, if they really wanted to emphasize the whole "We're watching over the supporters" motif, they'd have gone with an Eagle... and because it's Drumpf, a Bald Eagle.

The guy started that Lion's Guard page and canned it within two hours. I have a hard time believing someone cracked his real identity, determined he had children, and determined where his children attended school within two hours. The story of the Lion's Guard didn't even circulate much until after the shutdown was declared.

The Obama administration is facing a Catch-22: a bipartisan effort to reform FOIA through bringing more transparency and ease-of-access to the program has passed.

Problem? This Obama administration has lobbied against it for several years. Will President Obama veto it, only to look a hypocrite?

Senate passes FOIA reform bill

The Senate on Tuesday unanimously passed a bill to expand the public's access to government records, after a year of delay.

The Senate's move means both chambers have now passed similar proposals to strengthen the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). Differences will still need to be resolved before the measure makes it to President Obama's desk — potentially forcing the administration's hand on a bill it has previously lobbied against.

Under the legislation, agencies would have to point to a specific "foreseeable harm" when withholding documents that would typically be exempt from public release. The legislation would also create a single FOIA request portal for all agencies, limit the amount of time that certain documents are exempt from disclosure and make more documents available online, among other things.

Lawmakers have tried get the bill passed for the past few years, despite opposition from the Justice Department and a handful of other civil enforcement agencies that have quietly opposed the legislation.

Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.), the lead sponsor of the House bill, said the most likely scenario is for the two bills to go to conference. If they are merged, he dared the administration to oppose it.

"I dare him to veto it," Issa told The Hill. "I dare the most open and transparent president in history to veto it."

[up][up]I read it was more like four. Either way though, I would believe it, if they offended enough people who were determined enough. Which they kind of did. No idea if they were actually legit though.

Actually, back in prehistory, America did have lions. It had no mane and they probably lived in caves and were solitary. It was one of the biggest cats that ever existed, but was likely driven extinct by human predation.

The problem with trying to expose Trump's skeletons in his closet is that he more or less uses skeletons as hood ornaments on his car. I doubt they'll expose anything about him that will turn his fanbase off.

Well, maybe if he had someone murdered at some point, or something like that. I would not be surprised if he did do that at some point. The guy's American Psycho material.
