Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

There are mountain lions, though, right? I can't be killed over and over in GTA 5 by a creature that's not even in America.
There is the occasional fun part where one silently pick out bits of intellectual/moral dissonance for fun, such as seeing Person 1 say "How dare you try to besmirch Bernie supporters by saying anything bad about them! And even if they were bad, how can you hold Bernie responsible for their actions?! *Gasp* Look at the people who claim to support Clinton, isn't it terrible that she has such people supporting her! I don't know how anyone can ignore this issue and back Clinton!"
And then Person 2 comes in with "Look at the whacky BS people who claim to be Bernie supporters say online! I'm sure glad that nobody who supports Clinton has ever said whacky BS!" *Someone points out the whacky BS said by some Clinton supporter* "That's not the same for X reason!"
It's fun the first few times, but after that it just makes you want to skip it all.
| Wandering, but not lost. | If people bring so much courage to this world...◊ |So in unrelated news, and just for fun (Be warned though: Telesur is a known mouthpiece of Maduro)
Maduro calls out Obama for speaking out against Venezuela
oh and he also says for realsies that they are not gaining the most income out of oil stuff (probably because at this point Venezuela doesnt get much income at all)
2500 jobs moved to the UK
. Maybe after Trump finishes with the Mexicans and the Chinese he can go for those dirty irishmen, this way we can start going backwards in time and technology until we have to rediscover the wheel
New US-Cuba direct phone link established
so along with the flights and all more and more the relationships between the U.S and Cuba will be re established
Yeah. But they do not have manes.

It has always been the prerogative of children and half-wits to point out that the emperor has no clothesWhite House narrows search to three for Supreme Court
- a few days old but this is one topic I'm curious to see how it turns out.
I'm also curious-hopefully they'll find someone who's not too moderate. If not with this vacancy, with one of the ones that will inevitably occur in the next 4-8 years.
At any rate, I was skeptical at first but I'm pulling for Srinivasan. A moderate is the best we can do in this situation, and it'll be hard to deny him.
That's kind of my thought too. Would be better (not just politically but for the functioning of the Court) to appoint someone now who can get approved (which hopefully is the case for Sri). Then, if/when President Clinton II or President Sanders are elected, they can put up someone more "contentious", assuming RBG retires. Of course, the Republicans in Congress make everyone contentious.
I also kind of feel that while Scalia doesn't really deserve anything and there isn't a liberal equivalent of him (which is probably a good thing), it kind of feels better to me at least to replace him with a moderate rather than an ideologue. Although it would be funny to have proposed Scalia's arch-enemy, Richard Posner.
He was pretty unanimously supported as a federal judge. If you can believe it, both Bernie Sanders and Ted Cruz voted for him. His most controversial thing for liberals is that he defended white-collar criminal Jeff Skilling. On the other hand, he was also Al Gore's attorney when challenging the 2000 election results and as Solicitor General he argued against DOMA. From The Other Wiki he seems to have a mixed record in worker-rights cases.

Keep Rolling OnYes, after that Michigan upset he needs to repeat this performance in Ohio and Illinois to stay relevant.
Also, on the GOP side seems like Rubio is almost certainly going to lose to Trump (and Cruz?) in Florida, which would likely terminate his chances. Kasich may have a prayer of a chance in Ohio, his home state.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanMy own personal concern re: supreme Court is what will happen if Obama nominates someone and the Senate won't do their job as they've been promising. I've gotten the impression that Obama is aiming for the Republicans to shoot themselves in the foot yet again, but if they're able block him, could it end up making Obama look weak? If so, what could come from that?
There's tons of undecided voters, just not between parties. If the Republican Civil War collapses the party, we'll probably see a lot of Moderates emerge as the Democrat party breaks apart into the traditional American liberal right-winger and true left-wingers like Bernie Sanders.
The conflict right now between Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders is basically what the election politics between the Republican and Democrat parties is supposed to be. The Democrat in-fighting effectively is the electoral race at this point, while actual Republicans are bickering over which deranged yahoo should lose to Clinton or Sanders and the nation is holding its breath over whether we're actually stupid enough to elect one of those guys.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Yeah, I think there is an argument that Sri is sort of a safe pick/opportunity to call Republicans on hypocrisy if they reject him, and given the chance he'll end up blocked, maybe he's too safe.
But like he's a legal "bright light" and the kind of person who would be a good SC pick anyway, so I'm assuming that the goal is for him to be confirmed (assuming he's the choice), not just or even mainly for political theatre.
Speaking of the Supreme Court, that Republican governor briefly suggested, Brian Sandoval seems like a great guy in terms of both life story and moderate politics. Wish the Republican Party was putting up people like him for the Presidency rather than the current crop.
That's what I've been saying for a while now. Sanders vs Clinton is the real decisive conflict, as either is practically guaranteed to defeat the Republican nominee, especially if it's Trump, unless Diabolus ex Machina in form of spectacularly low turnout happens or something. And even then that's unlikely, as the terror of Trump reaching anywhere near presidency has awoken the nation in a way it's never been awake before.

Those Ben Garrison political cartoons are hilarious in how much he puffs up Trump, depicting him with rich flowing hair.
