Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Adding to the Hillary unpersoning Sanders thing

It's like she doesn't think digital documentation is a thing. @.o

It's probably just that Clinton or her campaign legitimately do not remember everywhere and with who she's been in her life, combined with a technological generation gap which Sanders' campaign has managed to avoid and co-opt by attracting the social-media savvy youth, who are all too willing to impugn Clinton's character with gotcha photos when Sanders himself is not. It also certainly helps that Sanders hasn't had to move all that much over the last three decades, since he started on the left of the 70's and stayed firmly anchored there as American culture drifted over to him on the social issues.

The problem with combining Sanders' economic policy and Hillary's contacts should be obvious. Hillary got her contacts by not having Sanders' policy.

I read something kinda interesting on Twitter the other day-they said that for all the talk of how Clinton's too conservative, you don't really hear about her supporters going on to support Trump.

That's because Sanders and Trump are both attracting 21st Century Proles. Hillary derives most of her power from the modern Bourgeoisie.

Hillary derives most of her power from the modern Bourgeoisie.

Only with white voters is this true, and even then only shakily. The young white bourgeoisie support Sanders, for instance.

True. Though the young white Bourgeoisie are effective proles in terms of economic conditions. Mediocre to Dead end jobs combined with the Student Debt crisis might as well make working class, not middle class.

Though it also seems Sanders gets a pretty sizable amount of the Minority Youth from what I remember reading, but intensity seems to be regional. Seems like general trend is Hillary leans on Older and Richer, Sanders leans towards Younger and Poorer. With Hillary having the support of the African American and Southwestern Hispanics of what we've seen so far.

Pretty much bullshit.

Marco Rubio won the District of Columbia’s Republican caucuses on Saturday, seizing his third primary season victory as a critical contest looms in his home state.

Meanwhile, Ted Cruz won the Wyoming caucus.

[up][up][up]Most or all of his supporters already know this, of course, since it's practically the centerpiece of his entire campaign. But don't worry! Critical journalists, op-ed writers, and other people will be sure to ignore it like they have been for the past five and a half months. There's no need to consider the actual aims, goals, platform, accomplishments, or worldview of a candidate for president of the ostensibly most powerful nation on Earth when you can just cherrypick and make up strawmen to suit your own preferences, after all! Besides, the revolution's not going to come, dont'cha know.

If the Goldshirts arrive, there will be plenty of Red Shirts counter-revolutionaries to oppose the diamond-plated overthrow of the most luxuriously spacious country in history, since the Godzilla Threshold will clearly have been reached. For example, anti-Trump vets and military folks aren't exactly hard to find. ...Can we call the Trump steaks the Goldshirts will be carrying Class-Y rations?

For the moment, I am going to retire from following the election on a day to day basis until November. Just screamed myself hoarse out of sheer panic and anger about Trump becoming the nominee and possibly the president.

Enjoy this train wreck, guys. I'm planting myself firmly in other threads. Safer on my health.

Trump's Closing Pitch In The Rust Belt: Your Factories Are Moving To Mexico, John Kasich Voted For NAFTA And Supports TPP

Last week, following Bernie Sanders' victory over Hillary Clinton in the Michigan Democratic primaries, CNN analyst Van Jones said that, "an anti-free trade message is breaking through in the rust belt," and that it is "not good" for Hillary Clinton. Trump also won the Michigan primary with a strong anti-NAFTA message.

"Right here [in Cleveland]," Trump said Saturday. "We've got on the left, you have Ford, the Ford Foundry," Trump said. "And that's moving to Mexico. And on the right you have Eaton. And that's moving to Mexico."

"It is crazy, what we're doing to our country is crazy... I'm a conservative person, but I'm in theory not so conservative on trade," he said. "Any direction I can point to, you're losing jobs, you're losing your plants. We're not going to let it happen any more."

"But your governor, I don't know if you know this, this is a tremendous problem. Your governor when he was a congressman voted for NAFTA," he said about his main opponent in the Ohio primary: Gov. John Kasich. "He's now in favor of the Trans-Pacific Partnership. It is a disaster. It is going to ruin your car industry, totally ruin it, and beleive me, that deal is very bad for a lot of reasons."

Kasich did vote in support of NAFTA and Sanders opposed, and Kasich has expressed himself in favour of TPP. So Trump's accusations in that regard appear to be true.

It's okay. If he does, there won't be a President Trump in 2020. There may be an Emperor Trump, or Fuhrer Trump, but not a President.

One upside for Trump 2016 is that he'd probably run the country into the ground, letting Democrats hold on their gains in 2006 and 2012 during the 2018 elections (which would be midterms on his back) and probably win in 2020 in time for the next redistricting rounds.

Of course, it'd be much better if they make significant gains in 2016.

Trump threatens to send supporters to Sanders events: 'Be careful Bernie'

Donald Trump early Sunday accused Bernie Sanders of lying by saying the Vermont senator's "disrupters" aren't told to go to the GOP front-runner's events.

Trump also threatened in a tweet that his supporters would go to Sanders events if the Democratic hopeful wasn't "careful."
