Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Oh, it's not that baffling. It's pretty simple actually: Trump is stuck in the 1980s.
Times change, so we get the hipsters instead.
But to answer the first question slightly more seriously, yes, there are some parallels, especially to the '64 election with Goldwater. (Who, ironically, was held up as a hero by Republicans who would spit on him for many of his policy positions.) I also think it's presaging the parties realigning themselves, much as they would start doing after '64 and completed with Nixon's Southern Strategy.

Well, that depends, really. The way I see it, the only people that might actually get excited about a new windows are people that get excited about any new gadgets, which are often hipsters. People that actually know about computers are mostly just wondering about the many ways microsoft is going to fuck their customers this time, and people that don't are perfectly happy using Windows 95 because it has Internet Explorer.

Well, my dad is now convinced that the Trump rally was shut down because the protesters were going to kill Trump and his supporters, and that Bernie Sanders only talked to Black Lives Matters supporters because if he didn't, they'd kill him.
This has been your inside scoop on the delusions of Trump's followers. Tune in next time.

There's also been all the social movements for civil rights like BLM and the gay rights movement, and Iraq is increasingly looking like Vietnam. The hipster culture seems to be resurfacing too, especially in places like Tumblr. Younger people listening to "edgy" music and all that (a lot like Elvis, although that's more 50s). Obama's also much like Kennedy in his idealism and youthful image, and "the torch being passed to another generation" thing. Seems like there should be a lot of riots ahead too given what happened last night. I really hope the comparisons stop there, considering all the assassinations in the 60s.

Hillary Clinton has won the Northern Mariana Islands caucuses.
Trump supporters are generally people who believe, somehow, this nation is on the verge of going down in flames. They are preppers who believe the United States is on the verge of collapse. They invest in gold because they believe the dollar is going to collapse. These sorts of people are also very prone to believing Conspiracy Theories, which isn't helped by the most powerful men in the world going to a private island resort to discuss how to take down Donald Trump!
Wizard Needs Food BadlyIf this is the 60's than it sure as hell is the tame version of it. College protestors are being annoying little shits, but they aren't taking their teachers hostage. We lost far fewer men in Iraq than we did in Nam, and in both cases it appears pulling out to soon caused the situation to get even worse. Hell even the Russians aren't nearly as menacing as they were before.
I Bring Doom, and a bit of gloom, but mostly gloom.Trump: Chicago protesters can be traced back to Sanders
Trump said his supporters at the rally "caused no problem."
"They were taunted, they were harassed by these other people — by the way, some represented Bernie, our communist friend," Trump said, drawing loud boos from the Dayton, Ohio, crowd.
"With Bernie, he should really get up and say to his people, 'stop, stop.' Not me."

That's First Amendment, Trump. You're protected from legal prosecution for the shit you spout, but society can still cast its own judgment in the matter. And it'll be interesting to find out who threw punches - apparently a CBS reporter was one of the five arrested for, ironically, resisting arrest.
I would not call this "1960s Lite" but there are certainly similarities. In Iraq, we have a costly war that the United States should not have been in like Vietnam. Racial issues are back at the forefront again, with the treatment of African-Americans by police, as well as the treatment of Hispanics and Muslims in general. In addition, we have a current frontrunner of the Republican party that is undesirable for the Republican Establishment for his political views.
Wizard Needs Food BadlyAh yes, because demanding improvements and social change is just horrifying, amirite? Also, where are you getting this "60s students held their professors hostage" crap? Give us some actual evidence for once, Jack.
Then why do you continue to say that they are the biggest threat to the world (along with China)? Someone is doublethinking too hard.
"Somehow the hated have to walk a tightrope, while those who hate do not."
They are the biggest threat to the US, the biggest threat to the world is global warming.
This incident at Columbia university
Though the original article I read on the topic merely said that hostages were taken, which is still a serious crime mind you, but not that they were released unharmed after a day no worse for wear. Their were also a number of armed occupations in the vein of y'all Quaeda. The difference of course being they were leftists, so you guys all view them as heroes.
I doubt that Bernie's going to lose any support for driving Trump out of Chicago. He'll lose support among deluded Trump supporters but they don't matter anyway.
And also we've done the Vietnam thing of "Pull out and let the region's actual government do the heavy lifting" now. The major difference in this is that Iraq is not in a civil war where one half of the country decides to willingly violate a treaty, and also that we're not refusing to help afterwards and the Iraqis and Kurds are doing the actual heavy lifting.
Not sure if these got mentioned yet:

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. How about
- Not making assumptions about all of us, please
- Actually showing news of these occupations, because some of us literally never heard of them before
Is it wrong that I pictured something else when I heard "penal colony"?
Well, you see it all started with my mother, an apron, and an unusually smooth cucumber...

So Trump is the missing piece of the Two Island Strings strategy. Has anyone checked that the Chinese aren't paying him?
