The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Donald Trump to Ted Cruz: Only a Corrupter Like Me Can Fix Corruption

Donald Trump went after Ted Cruz’s reliance on super PA Cs at the GOP debate in Miami on Thursday, saying that his own history of buying influence with politicians positions him better to take on systemic corruption than having been on the receiving end.

“These super PA Cs are a disaster, by the way, folks. Very corrupt. It’s going to lead to lots of disasters. But Ted has super PA Cs and you have to look at the people that are giving to those super PA Cs, number one,” said the real estate mogul. “It’s very important to do that.”

Super PA Cs are technically “independent” groups that allow corporations and wealthy individuals to spend unlimited sums of money backing candidates.

“There is total control of the candidates, I know it better than anybody that probably ever lived. And I will tell you this, I know the system far better than anybody else and I know the system is broken.

“And I’m the one, because I know it so well because I was on both sides of it, I was on the other side all my life and I’ve always made large contributions. And frankly, I know the system better than anybody else and I’m the only one up here that’s going to be able to fix that system because that system is wrong.”

That's a very Robert Baratheon-like thought and it won't work because of that.

Went to a Bernie rally in Raleigh today, just got out. Turnout was YUUUUUGE, though he vowed to stop using that word after the crowd parroted it back at him. He also delayed his entrance to speak to the similarly yuge overflow crowd for fifteen minutes or so, which was nice. His entire speech was very appropriately volumed and well-reasoned while remaining frank and passionate. Nothing shouty about it.

I've been hearing good things out of North Carolina. I think Sanders has a good chance there even if he loses Florida.

So what exactly is the thing with assisted suicide? Because it's generally frowned upon where I'm at.

Some states are moving to allowing physicians to assist patients with serious untreatable diseases to commit suicide. It's a touchy subject because you need some serious consenting procedure and because killing someone is always a dicey thing.

During an interview with MSNBC on Nancy Reagan's funeral, Hillary Clinton praised the former First Lady and her husband President Reagan for pushing a national discussion on the HIV/AIDS crisis.

“It may be hard for your viewers to remember how difficult it was for people to talk about HIV/AIDS in the 1980s. And because of both President and Mrs. Reagan, in particular, Mrs. Reagan, we started national conversation when before no one would talk about it, no one wanted to do anything about it, and that too is something that really appreciated, with her very effective, low-key advocacy, but it penetrated the public conscience and people began to say ‘Hey, we have to do something about this too.’”

She's not wrong, though. Keep in mind that a lot of disinformation spread around regarding AIDS/HIV prior to being officially addressed (e.g. "it can be caught like a cold!" and "only Gays are effected") - though I think Ervin "Magic" Johnson's retirement after catching it probably helped a bit more in regards to fixing public attention on it to begin with.

Basically the Reagans were complete assholes to Homosexuals and victims of HIV and AIDS, prevented funding and research and generally treated HIV and AIDS like a fart joke. The LGBT community FUCKING LOATHES AND DESPISES the Reagans.

Ideally in the future, hospitals could record everything that goes on in the hospital in high enough quality, that there can be no doubt exactly what happened, whether in a surgical procedure or interaction towards patients.
