Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Jon Voight backs Donald Trump BTW. I know the guy is a staunch Republican, but I feel like the only reason he backed the Donald was so he could play him in a future movie. The two look strangely alike, sans the hair.
She despises Hil and Trump both, while Rubio is clearly imploding. It's a tactical choice on her part, though I know a lot of former supporters of hers who feel rather betrayed...

Yeah, Fiorina was always a crackpot; she just seemed sane until she started opening her mouth in a political arena.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Huh. So let me see if I can understand this...
From what I understand here, the people who vote in the primaries are those registered with their parties. Why is the number so discrepant? And why does it vary so much from state to state? In new mexico theres a hundredthousand democrats and only a few thousand republicans boting but the voting age opulation is like a million and a half?

I wonder what they'll do for Bernie or Hillary when they fall, especially Bernie, as some people in the audience probably will actually be crying. And I can only imagine the spectacle of the final cornucopia battle that will be the general election
@Septimus a few pages back: what i meant is that the Democrats wouldn't want a Majority Leader who isn't a Democrat. I said "thought leader" earlier when i shouldn't have, he really can't have a formal leadership position unless he's willing to change affiliation. I mean, he could, but the Democrats in congress are a very procedural and seniority-based organization and it would ruffle a lot of feathers if Sanders line-jumped, even though he is one of the more senior Senators who caucuses with them.
He can continue to lend his weight to causes for perhaps 1 more term (his current one ends in 2018), or retire and spend what remains of his life campaigning for causes, as he's good on the stump and has a strong message and can help people who most need visibility get it.
He should start a Foundation, honestly.
only half
of you people vote? Why did I ever think the U.S.' was higher?
@Ogodei: Methinks "thought leader" was a different topic from what I am wishing.
Whether such a campaign will lead to the Democrats accepting Sanders as a caucus leader is not so important as to push Congress in a more left direction. And to keep the Sanders surge active past White House primary season. This is why I am wishing for this.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanSo, my mother supports Kasich and, from the sound of things, won't vote for anyone else in the General election (she's hard-line Pro-Life, akin to Brazil in mindset). Part of her rationale is that she wants the political bickering in Washington to stop, and thinks he'd be the only one able to accomplish that.
I don't think it's that simple, especially because, if anyone but someone with an (R) next to their name wins the Presidency, the Republicans will continue to bitch, moan, and stonewall regardless of whether it's Sanders, Clinton, or Jack Shit of Podunk, Michigan. And getting them to stop by electing a Republican would be like getting your kid to stop throwing a tantrum by finally giving him the cookie - the wrong lesson gets learned.
"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"You should mention that Kasich also wants to return us to the gold standard, which would turn our economy into something akin to Brazil's in short order.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Oh no, automatic registration with an ability to opt out would be far too difficult! I mean, do you really want the evil gov't to have a list of registered voters in a database? Besides, how are we going to pay for it, raising taxes? Sorry, we can't enact legislation ensuring your right to have a say in whether we're elected because it might overly burden job creators. If you want to vote, take time off of work to register and to pay for the correct kind of ID card depending on your state's laws and then take time off work again to actually cast a ballot, since creating a genuine national holiday for Election Day would be too much of a drag on the economy and also probably violate states' rights or something. Don't forget to register for the draft, though, in case we need to throw you into whatever real or falsified war we decide to undertake next! Now get back to slaving away at your underpaid job without adequate benefits or vacation time, plebeian!

Now what makes that funny, is that in Finland you can't opt out from anything. Not the draft or voter registration, among other things that are kind of automatic. There's only one way to opt out from Finland
◊.
I agree with that platform. The modern toilet is extremely wasteful and poorly designed.
I still say we get Vermin Supreme and Jimmy Mc Millan to run on a ticket together.
Have you any dreams you'd like to sell? While the difficulties associated with voter registration and other laws specifically intended to make it hard for the poor to vote are certainly a thing, you should also never underestimate voter apathy.

To re-rail things, Fiorina is now backing Cruz.
