Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

A Slate commenter, "Scowler", had an insight I wanted to repeat over here:
I hadn't thought that the Supreme Court had been one of the engines driving the Republican rush to the right, but in retrospect the idea makes a lot of sense. Since Bush's election, Republicans haven't had to pretend that they cared about anyone's opinion but their own.
CURRENT GOP DELEGATE ACCOUNT
Trump - 458 (+71)
Cruz - 359 (+56)
Rubio - 151 (+0)
Kasich - 54 (+17)
So far Rubio has been awarded zero delegates.

Any group who acts like morons ironically will eventually find itself swamped by morons who think themselves to be in good company.Yeah, there's no way Sanders would willfully sabotage the Democratic Party by running independently. He'd much rather see Clinton in the White House than Trump or Cruz.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Hah. High Priest Cruz. I like that.
As for Sanders...nice upset, but as Ach said it still seems like he will need a couple more wins that seem to not favor him to cement his presence. Sucks for Hillary (I am sure she will be fine tho) but nice to hear Sanders is being given more attention
It has always been the prerogative of children and half-wits to point out that the emperor has no clothesClinton picked up more delegates yesterday, even considering Sanders' upset win in Michigan.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"It's not impossible that Sanders would run as an Independent. If Trump gets shut out at the RNC and runs Independent, Sanders might do the same if the Democratic nomination is decided by superdelegates (which I'm told would be outrageous).
There's also the ongoing FBI investigation into Clinton's emails. I don't mean the nonsense stuff. I mean the possibility they can prove that she did favors for big donors to the Clinton Foundation during her time at the State Department. Considering they gave immunity to the guy who set up her email server, some say this may actually be going somewhere. I mean, it seems insane that they'd actually indict her. They never go after powerful people. But what if they did?
Again, Sanders would never go independent against Clinton. He would not hand the country to the Republicans like that. Differences aside, both are working towards the same basic goals.
For the FBI to indict a presidential nominee would be unprecedented in my recollection. I think that if that were to happen, Clinton would have to drop out to defend herself, but she might not, and if she were elected President, she would become immune from prosecution unless she were impeached first. She might well be the first President to ever take office under imminent threat of criminal prosecution, though, and there's a legitimate concern that it could poison her candidacy.
If she were to drop out, allowing Sanders to become the nominee by default, that would be... interesting, to say the least.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"The issue at hand seems to be whether she ever knowingly stored classified documents on her private email server. Some of the emails that were reviewed seemed to have indeed been classified Top Secret at the time they were sent, and the argument is that she should have known this at the time.
There's also the thing with the Clinton Foundation, but I was not aware that there was an actual criminal investigation going on about it. It seems to be mainly chasing rabbits for the sake of having more rabbits to chase. If the Foundation did political favors for its big donors, then it merely joins the club of every other such foundation ever. The sin is not in doing it, but in getting caught doing it. And we wonder why people are cynical about politics.

Assuming of course, the international markets don't shit the bed and collapse the economy.
Everything assumes:
Or something similar.
