The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[up][up]I didn't. The libertarians as a coherent faction has imploded with the failure of Rand Paul to launch and the prior retirement of his father. All three existing factions are gaining their vote. Religious libertarians and constutitonalists are mostly going to Cruz, irreligious libertarians are sticking with the establishment as they hate Trump's Big Government Conservative policies and Ted's bible thumping and thus go with the devil they know, and Trump is gaining those who mostly care about getting out of entanglements overseas.

Not including those, of course, who will simply stay home.

[up]Yes.

Yep, you've got the Bankers, the Crusaders and the Fascists.

That sounds like the setup to a joke actually.

A Banker, a Crusader, and a Fascist walk into a pub. The bartender turns and says, "Mr. Trump, your usual?"

Damn it, Tobias did a better joke than what I was gonna do.

Anyways, the way it looks, the Republicans have little chance of even managing a win this election.

Have you any dreams you'd like to sell?

Don't be so sure. Lack of excitement with Hillary is real and a lot of people going for Sanders will go to Trump or stay home if he loses. And if he wins, a lot of the people who didn't like Trump will bite the bullet and go for him because they honestly (whether or not they are right is a different matter) think Sanders will destroy America.

I'm not sold on this "a lot of people will go home", is there anything to indicate that outside of internet stuff?

But yeah if Sanders gets the nomination the Republicans will push strong, after all "better dead then red".

My main worry is that Sanders fans don't seem to hate Trump with the same intensity that Rubio/Cruz fans hate Hillary.

Yeah, maybe the Redditor-type people, or the people who rhapsodize about wanting to see the world burn if they don't get their way but who would actually jump off their roof if their internet went out for a week, but other than that not really.

Question: do you guys think that Kasich could win Ohio? I only ask because he's my governor, and he's the only Republican candidate my parents can confidently say that they like - they hate Trump, don't like Cruz, and are ambivalent towards Rubio. They're registered Republicans, but they're not hardcore about it, and are more centrist than anything - my mom actually thinks she should switch parties.

Kasich could win Ohio, but if your parents think he's a moderate, they really need to examine his platform a bit more closely.

Ohio is the only reason Kasich is still in this election. If he can win there than he'll likely get on the Vice-President shortlist.

Ohio is a purple state after all.

[up][up] Well, in comparison to the other Republicans, they consider him to be.

I think they mainly respect him for at least maintaining some level of decorum.

Really though, they'd rather vote for Clinton.

Already met one guy who doesn't mind Trump but prefers Sanders since both are populist. Granted, dude is a white Army officer, but my point being is that its not some myth.

So, anyone remember the guy that did "2016: Obama's America" as a scare-film in the run-up to the 2012 election? Well, he's at it again with Hillary, alleging that his [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dinesh_D'Souza#Election_campaign_finance_conviction arrest and conviction for campaign finance violations (namely giving $20,000 to Wendy Long's campaign in someone else's name and lying about it)]] was politically motivated.

I stopped watching after seeing the Ku Klux Klan used as a smear against the Democrats once again.
