Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

He considered talking to opponents, like the Soviets, a good thing, and took back his words, like calling the Soviet Union an evil empire, when peaceful deals were being reached. As opposed to Tea Party never surrender never deal with the enemy mentality.
Can you imagine Ted Cruz in this scenario?
After their talk, the two leaders strolled out of the Kremlin onto Red Square. They stopped to talk with small groups of people. Picking up a small boy in his arms, Gorbachev said, “Shake hands with Grandfather Reagan.” As the two men were walking back toward the Kremlin, Reagan was confronted with the same question he had been asked repeatedly over the past couple of years. A reporter brought up Reagan’s famous epithet about the Soviet Union five years earlier: “Do you still think you’re in an evil empire, Mr. President?”
Reagan didn’t hesitate. “No,” he answered. “I was talking about another time and another era.”

I doubt he'll get to, there are three living Regan children, the adopted son from the first marriage (so not Nancy's son) is a right wing nut, the daughter seems to not be in politics and Nancy and Ronald's son? He's a Sanders supporting Atheist, so Cruz isn't going to be let near the thing, I suspect that the family will not let politics become apart of it.

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranHaving watched some of his speeches and his debate with Bush senior, I do find him an immensely more likeable and charismatic guy than any of the current GOP candidates. It's weird how the current Republican party uses the man as their ideological mascot, but none of them really seems to even be trying to emulate his approach to public speaking. If anything, his manner of conveying his message strikes me as way more similar to Obama's.
Talking about Nancy Reagan and Margaret Thatcher as if they had the same level of power and influence is a really faulty comparison. Nancy wasn't even a political figure-she was a first lady. Thatcher was the PM of the UK for more than a decade. To say nothing of their respective personalities.

And with Reagan, he made a lot of bad choices as president, but I don't think most, or any, of the people here hate him as a person. His wife...anyone under a certain age probably wouldn't care either way.
