Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

It's a good strategy, but it won't work because the GOP Establishment doesn't really like Cruz either. They think that his rigid social conservatism will make him unelectable in a general election. They'll keep trying to shill Rubio and (to a lesser extent) Kasich.
Speaking of Kasich:
Arnold Schwarzenegger snubs Trump, endorses John Kasich

Any group who acts like morons ironically will eventually find itself swamped by morons who think themselves to be in good company.I'm facepalming enough to turn my forehead red at the fact that somehow basically the worst possible candidate is winning the GOP nomination.
I would move to Canada, but they're too left-leaning (which is why it's hilarious whenever a Republican says they'll leave the country), so the only option is to found a space colony or something. Anyone want to join? Completely Trumpless society, filled with coffee and donuts, and a 25% chance of ending up in the next Bioshock game.
Leviticus 19:34I don't like Trump's economics, either, which makes Trump left AND right of me on different issues.
In seriousness, I'd probably stay put even if Trump was elected, because someone has to stick around to vote him out of office and complain from the inside, and from a purely self-interest standpoint I don't think Trump's xenophobic policies will effect me personally as I'm a white cishet protestant male. Though, as a person in an artistic field, I'm a bit concerned about Trump eventually trying enacting censorship laws.

Leviticus 19:34So I feel the Atlantic's live coverage of the debate was pretty good
,note but especially it's observation of the end that, despite all of the mudslinging as well as valid criticism of Trump, they would still support him as a candidate.
And of course they would. They have to respect the will of the people. It's too bad a lot of those people hate their guts.
Similarly, it's why a brokered convention, while absolutely fantastic for liberals and maybe even conservatives (ideologically if not electorally), could be an unmitigated disaster for the standing of American democracy. On the other, it's already been debased so much just by how this debate went down, maybe it doesn't even matter.
I do wonder when the business Republicans will finally crack and realise that there's only one way to win the White House, remove the "natural born" bit from the requirements to run and run Schwarzenegger.
Assuming Trump wins the nomination and then looses the general the top levels of the Republican Party are going to be very confused, they need somebody who the base will okay but the empty suits aren't doing it, Schwarzenegger seems to be the best answer and for him the rules would have to change.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranWouldn't be worth the effort. Amending the Constitution just for that would be exponentially more difficult to do than simply winning the Presidency with some other candidate. (although you were probably joking)
GM: AGOG S4 & F/WC RP; Co-GM: TABA, SOTR, UUA RP; Sub-GM: TTS RP. I have brought peace, freedom, justice, and security to my new Empire. You know, America and Canada should merge and become the Large United North American Republic. Or: LUNAR. It'd be awesome.
Leviticus 19:34Sanders agrees to participate in Fox News presidential town hall without Clinton.
Trump's plan apparently includes tripling the size of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and increasing its general and enforcement abilities.
I wonder if he is going to give it a weapons division, a general division and an assignment group...
I really hope people treat him not so much as a joke, otherwise things could get bad.
@Garcon, unless you are in Quebec (outside of Montreal/Gatineau) or parts of New Brunswick (and why the hell you would go there I have no idea
) you will do fine in Canada as an English speaker.
Does he start handing out spiffy hats and lightning bolt insignia at some point?

Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.
On the other hand, Canada joining the US as at least a half dozen new states with about the same amount of electoral votes as California (in total) would essentially ensure that the GOP would never hold the Senate or the White House again until they cleaned up their act.

Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.@ Rational Insanity: Presumably. Trump has shown through politics and affiliations he wants to emulate Hitler and his government and offices as closely as possible.
And there are some frighteningly legal ways he can pull it off. Declare a state of emergency and seize Mexican Remittance money. He'd get everything he wants - hit the Mexicans where it hurts, get the money for the wall, and stop "people from sending OUR money over to Mexico".
He can then continue siphoning money off there, and send it around to Party faithful and those less fortunate, thus guaranteeing people who will Heil when asked to.
And if Mexico plays tough with this? Send Die Schutzstaffel ICE south and...coax them into playing nicer with the money.

Having Trump lose the nomination due to scheming by the party establishment...well, it'd definitely piss off the people who are sick of the party establishment, and who knows where that could lead.
The GOP seems to have brought it on themselves, though.
Oh God! Natural light!
