Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

More like I don't like Trump.
I just really hope that someone other than Sanders or Trump is elected president. I'll take any candidate but those two.

Any group who acts like morons ironically will eventually find itself swamped by morons who think themselves to be in good company.
X7 Socalism isn't that bad, we haz (communally sourcured and created via a secure state run standardisation system) cookies.
What kind of punishment could he face? Because that many violations is pretty serious, the man may well be guilty of election fraud, that could easily carry a jails sentence.
I'd take Cruz over Trump any day. Trump is basically what would happen if a Troll decided to combine everything I dislike about Cruz and Clinton. Essentially, Cruz is "a few right wing policies I like, and some right-wing policies I dislike", where as Trump has "right-wing policies I dislike, left wing policies I dislike, and on top of that is a petty Jerkass".
...But those cookies have raisins in them!

Leviticus 19:34I heard on NPR that Republicans instituted a new rule for this year where whoever gets the nomination has to have won at least 8 states outright. Assuming that's accurate, (and NPR is usually good for accuracy in such matters) that is probably going to put the kibosh on several candidates, including Rubio and Kasich, because it's hard to see either picking up enough states to qualify right now, especially if both stay in. It's starting to feel like Trump vs Cruz battle, or bad vs worse.
Also, the Republican party is really splintering and cracking apart over this election. And the schadenfreude is delicious.
Bernie did slightly better than expected, which is good to see, but sadly I think the Democratic primary is likely to be virtually over in another 2 weeks or so. Can't say Bernie didn't give it a worthy attempt, and hopefully progressives will continue pushing the polls to the left and holding their candidates at all levels accountable for being progressive, rather than just going home to sulk. Because that's a big part of why this country isn't as progressive as it was 40 years ago.

| Wandering, but not lost. | If people bring so much courage to this world...◊ |Having said that, Cruz is not my favorite candidate. That title goes to Rubio, who I like because he's right-leaning while still being comparatively level-headed. Plus, he'd go a long ways towards Synth representation in our government.
...The Bo S must be throwing their weight behind Trump. It all makes perfect sense!

Leviticus 19:34They'd all spring to be the Minutemen's nominee at a minute's notice (hah), though. The name is perfect for them.
Oh God! Natural light!Sadly, Smokey, I doubt we're going to get a chance, or matter at all if we do. New York's primary isn't until April 19th, and if this is still a contest by the end of March, I'll be surprised. Pleased, but surprised. Another 16 or 17 states will vote through the rest of March, with a good chunk of them going either on Friday or on the 15th. By the 15th, I expect we'll likely have Clinton with a dominating lead. Maybe Bernie will surprise me and still be making a fight of it by that point, but I have my doubts.
Not that, it turns out, I can vote in the NY primary anyway, as I've missed my chance to change my affiliation from Independent. Curse you Teenage Self, who thought he was too good to be associated with parties and above labeling! *Shakes fist*
Oh, and for those of you dissing NY because Trump is from Queens, both Bernie and Notorious R.B.G are Brooklyn natives, as am I, so you know where you can shove it.

Well, if I was being serious, I'd say that Trump is closest to the Enclave. In fact, that's arguably barely even a metaphor, since all the Enclave is is a fascist wing of the American government. It would not be implausible that the Enclave came into power using someone like Trump.

Leviticus 19:34Define 'comparatively level-headed' for Rubio - he's got the most rabidly aggressive foreign policy stance by far, for a start. Having all those Bush Administration staffers on side will do that.
Trump has said many, many insane things in this election, but floating a ground war with Irsn is not, to the best of my knowledge, amongst them, for instance.
What's precedent ever done for us?I wouldn't mind a Bush-expy in office, to be honest. Trump's comments on Bush did not help build any respect for the former.
But as for Rubio, I'd much rather have a president who's too aggressive towards Iran than a person who regularly compliments dictators. I also have no reason to think of him as a racist or any more theocratic than I am, so there's that.
Leviticus 19:34I think publicly advocating for war crimes and deliberate targeting of civilians might qualify as more insane. A war with Iran would be horrible, but it wouldn't involve potential ethnic cleansing on the US' part.
That's not a than situation, hawkish presidents are normally the most buddy buddy with dictators, unless you mean hostile dictators as opposed the friendly ones? Also since when has a US president regularly complimented hostile dictators?
