Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

At the very least, I think it shows a certain degree of tone-deafness from that particular Sanders supporter. Whether it's a symptom of a larger problem is up for debate, although I do think that there are definitely some racist Sanders supporters.
Oh God! Natural light!@Le Garcon: IIRC, Stalin shot people for not clapping long enough at his speeches, which is petty and disproportionate even by Trump standards (though, to be fair, it isn't implausible that this is just Pragmatic Villainy on Trump's part. Contrary to his tasteless joke, he probably would lose voters if he actually shot someone).
Leviticus 19:34The problem with the "Berniebro" subgroup is, as I said, that they're extremely loud, tech-savvy, and very good at internet flash mobs - they can "organize" quite well through leaderless memes. (I use "organize" in the same sense I would use it for Anonymous - they're capable of speaking and acting together despite not having a leader or a canon.) Which makes them very good at tainting Bernie's message with their racism - Bernie can disavow them all he wants because they don't care about whether Bernie wants them around.
In other news, Clarence Thomas actually spoke on the bench, and almost as unusually, he came up with a reasonably strong question/argument: "Okay, are you trying to support a lifetime gun ban for a single misdemeanor assault offense?"
Speaking as someone who's unusually pro-gun for this forum, that's a cogent question even if it is domestic violence. (Of course, allowing a felony option for charging domestic assailants would be the coherent way to deal with this.)

I never knew that Obama boys were a thing, but then I'm smart enough to steer clear of reddit for political discourse.
Also, it seems like it's a couple of Sanders supporters here who started making a big deal out of the whole Bernie bros thing, because before that I recall it coming up once in response to Sanders' telling them to stop being assholes. So uh... yeah I don't think this thread was actually making a big deal out of this particular issue? Unless I missed it.
It wasn't to start with, really. I just brought up the fact that it's a rehash of a 2008 attack a couple pages ago because people had repeatedly mentioned the pseudo-phenomenon of "Berniebros" on the page before that and I thought it would be good to point out as a matter of keeping people informed. After that, someone brought up the probably-racist phone call as reported by somebody on Yahoo, and presented that as "evidence in the wild" to rebut the article I'd linked, and after that we spiraled off into the racism discussion.
But the thread wasn't making a big deal of it beforehand, yes.
GM: AGOG S4 & F/WC RP; Co-GM: TABA, SOTR, UUA RP; Sub-GM: TTS RP. I have brought peace, freedom, justice, and security to my new Empire.Very true. Also true of every Presidential campaign's supporters, unfortunately. The nearly inherent tribalism of politics tends to drag out the worst, most assholish elements of any given voter base. It would be wrong, however, to conflate that with a majority - or even a substantial portion - of any candidate's support without data, which the "berniebro" notion as popularized and promulgated by the punditocracy does.
GM: AGOG S4 & F/WC RP; Co-GM: TABA, SOTR, UUA RP; Sub-GM: TTS RP. I have brought peace, freedom, justice, and security to my new Empire.I don't think anyone's claiming it's a majority. I think what they are claiming is that supporters of this nature, if they are numerous enough and vocal enough, could alienate many potential voters.
Quite a few people seem to think that Sanders has stumbled a bit on race relations, and while some think he's recovered and is trying to improve on that front, this sort of thing only makes that problem worse.

Oh God! Natural light!New York ruled against the FBI in the apple iphone case
. Note that this is a seperate case from the one associated with San Bernardino. Its strangely ironic that the FBI is trying to do something in the name of security that will only make us less secure
Apparently Trump kicked some black students out of one of his rallies. They weren't even protesters, they were just there because it was happening at their college and were probably interested in what he had to say.

Trump Tales: that time he disqualified
two Ms universe contestants for being mixed race.
"It's not about racism, it's about celebrating purity of diversity in the universe".
Wow, that actually sounds like something some of the villainous factions in the game I'm making would say. In fact, I might actually use that.
Leviticus 19:34What Le Garcon said. I think what Trump's trying to say is that he wants pageant competitors to ethnically represent the nation they come from to protect that nation's "image". This is still hella racist in its own way, though.
Leviticus 19:34Yeah, basically.
Can't have a Ms. Japan be only half-Japanese, now can we? That can't possibly be accurate. And why can't we be both diverse and pure? That should make people on both sides happy!
It actually fits with his political stance, pushing for an America for Americans note , similar to right-wing groups in other countries.

CNN: Greg Abbott "doesn't know" if Republicans should disavow KKK support
86% of Trump Supporters at the Rand Panel believe they have no say in how the government is run.
Half of GOP voters in this panel also favor higher taxes on the rich. Almost 40% have favorable opinion of labor unions.
They are claiming that they are numerous, and unique to Bernie, conveniently never talking about bigotry from Clinton supporters, as if it doesn't exist. Notice how many people here only refer to Bernie supporters as "Berniebros", in any context.
Two can play at this game. If some random anecdotal evidence is enough for this smear(and for the ridiculous "Trump crossover" thing taken at face value here for some reason), I can claim a significant number of Clinton supportives are exactly like Nihlus - right-wingers voting for her to hold back progress. And that they, if it comes down to Sanders vs Trump, might rather vote the latter. Makes as much sense. I'm gonna come up with a vaguely demeaning term for these, say, Clintontrumps, and then despite totally not claiming they're a majority, I'm going to only use this term whenever I mention Clinton supporters.
Fact checking? Who needs fact checking?

But how does that translate into racism? It's not liking voting for Hillary means they must be black.
