Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Trump represents the ultimate crisis of the Republican party. They don't have a voter foundation anymore, and it's becoming increasingly more obvious that "we'll vote for anything, as long as it's racist" is absolutely true. Trump's combination of fucking Columbian social views and Democratic economic views keeping him as the top candidate is completely shattering them.
Really hoping you're being sarcastic.

I'd argue Trump is creating a new Republican base of poor and formerly middle-class conservatives, rather than the existing base of current middle class and high income Republicans.
Trump could still capture a fair amount of Republicans voters through just the Democratic economic policies and no racist/nativist/sexist rhetoric, but then the right-wing and liberal media wouldn't have blasted him across the TV and Internet as much as they have and guaranteed him an audience of potential voters.
Remember, Trump's moderate policies are what the establishment Republicans hate. His rhetoric was acceptable and what gave him a podium in the first place. He conned the GOP.

Sanders-leaning voters don't hate her, as such. They're just afraid of her passing TPP and TTIP and betraying them in other ways for the sake of her Big Money friends. Because those things are fucking awful.
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.I, again, will have to disagree. Mr Wall has too many people absolutely horrified at the prospect of him getting anywhere near presidency, and that alone is a powerful voter base for anyone who runs against him.
On the other end, a candidate who has consistently favored anti-progressive policies under a Democrat cloak, who has Wall Street donating to her to this day, who's doing the "Atoner" angle less convincingly than fucking Norman Osborn did as things like TPP support and hatred of single-payer slip through that mask anyway, is far more dangerous because unlike Trump, Clinton is actually electable.
Trump might fail, but I'm pretty sure his Hard Right Racism and Moderate/Progressive Economic Leftism is the new Goldwater/Movement Conservatism shift in the party. Don't expect what he's built here to vanish like a fart in the wind. It's going to keep festering in the GOP.
There's no way those things aren't getting leaked.

@Le Garcon: Since I come from a country that suffered 6 military coups in the 20th century (the third of which was to kick out a right-wing populist whom, ironically enough, was part of the first two coups) I can guarantee you that NO MATTER HOW HORRIBLE TRUMP MAY BE AS A PRESIDENT, ANYTHING IS BETTER THAN A MILITARY DICTATORSHIP/COUP. And if they do assassinate him, you're just turning him into a "martyr" for the people who voted for him.

1 2 We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be. -KVMinorities are growing every cycle, the hard right racism will be the death of the GOP sooner or later. Angry white people alone don't win elections.
And frankly if there are Sanders voters out there who would stay home/vote Trump (or third party, basically the same thing) out of spite if Sanders loses/misguided view of Trump's economic stances; fuck em. Don't need them in the party, that's as equally dangerous as Trump's supporters. Same goes for Clinton supporters as well. With Us or Against Us is in full effect in this election; the GOP is too goddamn insane to let even Rubio or Kasich near the Oval Office.

Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.I'm sorry, but you spend all your time blasting Hillary for being untrustworthy and flipping her positions and you're taking Donald Fucking Trump at face value?!! The guy who is probably going to be answering questions before court within the next few months for running a fraudulent "university" that wasn't a school at all?
You're going to take him at his word? You think Trump will tax hedge funds despite calling for it one day, then copying Jeb's standard "tax cuts for the rich, fuck the poor" tax plan the next
? You think Donald Trump can be trusted to raise the minimum wage when he's said that part of the problem is that American wages are too high?
When do we see you question any other politicians the way you go after Clinton? If Clinton acted the same way and said the same thing, we'd be inundated with pages of links about how full of shit she is, but Trump says it and you're willing to entertain the thought that maybe this time he's being honest? Seriously, what the fuck?!

x4 - I don't think assassinating Trump would necessarily lead to a military dictatorship. The salient point would be to get him out of the Oval Office. After that, let whoever's legitimately next in line for the presidency step in, because anyone would be better than that crazy orangutan.
Again, I live in a country that had military coups. If the army actually chose to kill a democratically elected president they wouldn't allow another election for quite some time.

Still can't believe so many people even tolerate Trump. My mom even kind of likes him, though my dad has said he'll vote Hillary if Trump wins the nomination. Which gives me every reason to pray to god it's Hillary vs Rubio, as anything else would probably wreck my home life.
I Bring Doom, and a bit of gloom, but mostly gloom.
