The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Also there's a desire for Bill and Hillary, if they're going to insist being Progressives or faking it at least, to own up to their non-Progressive decisions of triangulation in the 90s and 00s.

At least that's what I want.

The editorial board of the New York Times (which endorsed Clinton, remember) has now called on her to release her Goldman Sachs transcripts:

The suspicion is that Hillary's speeches would contain opinions and comments that would completely torpedo her image as a fighter for the middle class and poor, and have her telling the banks what huge fucking little shits the poor and middle class are and deserved to suffer for taking out bad loans or something.

Basically her speeches to Sachs and the like contain opinions that would destroy her public image, and she has to be keeping the speeches locked up so her approval ratings don't drop like a stone.

Clinton supposedly discussed policy in at least some of her speeches. There's speculation she indicated a willingness to repeal or modify Obama's signature Wall Street reform bill, Dodd-Frank.

The Clinton camp is on record promising to be more favorable to Wall Street than Obama. If there's record of her admitting doing something so far as repealing one of Obama's landmark first-term bills, that'd sink her alone.

Yes, that might hand the primary to Sanders on a golden plate.

At this point, if Hillary turns out to have been hired for musical help on the goldman sachs speeches and her released speeches consisted of only the lyrics of 'the songs from The Sound of Music, she would still get incinerated by them from pretty much anyone.

It's buzzwords and business babble, and those are vaguely and easily interpretable stuff for one way or another.

Doomed if she does, doomed if she doesn't, either way.

Pretty much. But them's the breaks when you're a pro Corporate/pro Wall Street Lawyer and Legislator running during a time period when the average citizen wants to proverbially lynch Wall Street executives.

That's more or less exactly why she shouldn't release the transcripts: because they aren't going to satisfy anyone. They're just going to be mined for anything that can be used to create further outrage. Even if, as noted, all they contain is the lyrics to the Sound of Music, no one who's screaming for her to release them is going to read them and go, "Oh. This is entirely sound and reasonable. I withdraw my objection."

I mean, how many people stopped accusing Obama of being a Secret Muslim Terrorist when he released his birth certificate? History speaks for itself. Nobody wants proof in politics. When they demand proof, it's because they want more fuel for the spin engine.

Letting them keep screaming at the brick wall of, "RELEASE THE TRANSCRIPTS ARGLEBLARGL" is better for her campaign than giving them talking points like, "This sentence taken out of context proves that she's conspiring to murder all the gays!"

While I agree with the logic for not releasing them I do stand that Hillary's claim that she'd release them if Sander's did was stupid. She should have strait up said "they're business speeches that mean nothing but are easily twistable and this demand is absurd so I'm not releasing them", not "you first".

What exactly did Bill Clinton do with welfare reform?
He signed the "Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Act" which forcibly tied Welfare to work requirements and ended it as a reliable safety net to poor families, and placed a 5 year limit of benefits paid by federal funds, among other thing. Mostly because of scares in the 70s and 80s of Welfare Queens who were using the money to buy Cadillacs and high quality T Vs and expensive shit by duplicate fraud accounts that weren't happening.

Basically the Clintons in an attempt to triangulate and boost the power of Democrats and compromise with Republicans, gutted a major New Deal provision over fears that people (especially African Americans) were cheating the system.
