The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

About Trump, I'm getting increasingly worried about him. The racists are a part, yes, but I'm worried about those who blame the Establisment for everything, those who think that America is now weak, and those who would vote for him as a "joke".

I'm Trump's own words "now he's got maybe a 4 or 5 percent chance." I'm grateful to him for making the election cycle interesting at the GOP's expense, is nothing else.

Those first three, if not the same group, have significant overlap so I don't think they're that big. The last is a bunch of dumbass assholes, and also probably not that large.

Anyway, those Y'allqueda folks have now got a trial date for April. Guess we'll see what happens to them then.

I suspect their trial will take some time. Hopefully they get put away for decades.

As for Trump, barring a major terrorist attack, a huge economic downturn, or a crippling scandal occurring after the Democratic primaries; Trump's net disapproval among too many groups will damn him. His will probably drive Democratic voter turnout up, unless the Sanders (or possibly Clinton's) supporters don't fall in line if they lose.

I heard Ted Cruz wants to ban Gluten free meals in the military, as he thinks Celiac disease is not real.

More like an idiot, if he can't be bothered to look up what Celiac's disease is. In any case, I don't think the president can directly do that, that seems like micromanaging.

I heavily doubt that Carson would be Trump's VP. I think its far more likely he'll pick a candidate with establishment credentials, not another outsider. Walker, Scott, or Rubio seems more likely. Maybe Kasich or Scott.

Jeb, Fiorina, and Cruz all seem to hate him so I doubt any of them are in the running.

[up]An establishment politician would destroy their career siding with Trump that closely. Hell, Trump getting nominated is going to put Republican Senators, Representatives and Governors in swing states in a very awkward position.

Two Black Lives Matter activists interrupted a private Hillary Clinton fundraising event Wednesday night in Charleston, South Carolina.

Youth activist Ashley Williams demanded that the Democratic presidential candidate account for inconsistencies in her record on race, specifically around comments she made about crime in 1996.

Williams said she and a colleague, whom she did not identify, contributed $500 to attend the Clinton event, which was held at a private residence and was attended by around 100 guests.

[* * *]

As Clinton spoke to the crowd, Williams stood to her side and held a sign quoting controversial statements Clinton made in 1996 in reference to at-risk youth, when she said "we have to bring them to heel."

[* * *]

“Hillary Clinton has a pattern of throwing the Black community under the bus when it serves her politically," Williams said in a statement before the event. "She called our boys ‘super-predators’ in ’96, then she race-baited when running against Obama in ‘08, now she’s a lifelong civil rights activist. I just want to know which Hillary is running for President, the one from ’96, ’08, or the new Hillary?”

California is the most populous state in the country, and by itself in the top 10 largest economies in the world (as in, if it was considered a country separate from the rest of the USA). Texas is, of course, the 2nd largest in the same categories and also generally considered part of the West. Ultimately, the issue is just that the states in the East are way smaller, but each relatively more important to the election. It's a fairly common joke that California should secede because the rest of the country is just holding us back (not that we don't have our own problems).

[up] Also, California, Arizona, Texas and Alaska weren't originally part of the U.S. They were parts of Mexico (California, Arizona, and Texas) and Russia (Alaska) that were bought by the U.S and later became states.

[up][up]Which you could probably tell from the fact that all of our major cities have Spanish names?

The criticism of Hillary is the same as it always is: that she says what's most politically convenient to say in the current climate, without any strong ideals of her own. 20 years was a long time ago. That said, that also means she'd never say such a thing now, for better or worse.

[up][up][up]We are generally aware of all of that, you know. I ... don't know why that was necessary to say? Most of the states weren't originally part of the country, we don't need a history lesson on that. Also, SJ Ws has appeared to morph into a term thrown at anyone who even shows the slightest hint of giving a shit about inequality so... maybe you shouldn't use that term. Those BLM kids have every right to bring up this issue. It's a pretty damn serious issue. Just because you don't agree with the method doesn't mean it's not important. (And unfortunately disruption is sometimes the ONLY means to get said point across.)

[up][up]Because in spite of that there's been decades of building up a relationship/voting base and she also appears to share that with her husband dating back to his governership and presidency? There's lots of politicians that have said questionable/terrible things and yet go on to enjoy popularity with particular demographics.

"Rabid feminists" is more of a warning than "SJ Ws". Frankly, if that's the terminology you use I don't know why I should take you seriously, because people who talk like that are probably not prepared to talk about issues of social justice and politics seriously in my experience. Referring to anyone as rabid is intentionally dismissive.

That may not be what you're intending to say, but it's what you're saying regardless.

I hate SJ Ws.

Do you have any actual criticism of the actions or do you just want to throw around buzzwords?

This whole "gluten free" business actually reminds me of how I'm kind of angry at the people who turned "gluten-free" into a fad diet, because it does lead people who don't know any better to think that's all gluten-free is. Of course, that's no excuse for politicians like Ted Cruz; they absolutely should know better (and I suspect he does, and is saying it as red meat for his would-be voters).

SJW, Rabid Feminist, etc. Just words used by bigots to immediately dismiss anyone with remotely progressive views.

Once those terms come up I just disregard anything that person has to say.

Oh really when?
