The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I...kinda feel sorry for poor Jeb.

Now he will have to go back to his thousand acre ranch to party on for years to forget about the...

Ok nevermind I am not sorry for him anymore.

Bush and Trump hate each other. Trump has made it his mission since he started his campaign to tear apart Jeb's reputation and credidentials. The only circumstance where Jeb would accept an offer to become Trump's VP nominee is one where he's part of a conspiracy to assassinate him.

Does Trump/Cruz look credible? The clown and the monster, as it were.

Also, about Sandoval: Whew, that was fast! Only rumour stage and already the "lolnos" are in.

Trump and Cruz did joke about accepting each other as a VP, but honestly I don't think either of them would want to work with the other.

If Trump were to choose a running mate from the field of also-rans, it'd be Carson. He'd add a bit of cross-demographic appeal, all while being the perfect ornament who wouldn't ever bother to add new opinions or original thoughts to Trump's drivel.

Rubio doesn't seem to hate his job. And I don't think he came from wealth the way Bush did.

[up] Rubio's too ambituous to suit Trump. Trump would want a quiet, submissive, non-opinionated Yes-Man who's not likely to overshadow him, and who's not part of the Republican establishment, and thus not likely to alienate his more reactionary support base. Carson fits the bill, and as a bonus gives him a handy rebuttal to being called racist by his eventual Democratic opponent.

I'm not sure how much I believe that. For starters, that'd put me left of Clinton, which isn't especially likely (my political philosophy being inspired by the likes of Dennis Prager).

Also, in the past, some people who I consider to be a smite too right-wing it labeled as being centrist.

There was a rumor I saw somewhere that said it could be likely that Trump picks Florida governor Rick Scott as his running mate (I can't find the source, but it's just a speculation that I doubt has any validity).

If by some off possibility this ends up happening, I am not gonna be happy. I live in Florida. My mother works for the state at an institution that caters to people with developmental disorders over in Jackson County, called Sunland, and formerly worked as a special education teacher in Chipley, and she loathes what Scott has done to our state. He's funded more for his cronies in the private sector by cutting funding for many federal institutions like education, health care, and the prison system, and a lot of people have gone underpaid with not enough resources available to do their jobs properly. My mother had to quit her job in Chipley because nobody could offer her the proper resources to help with her students, many of whom were diagnosed with high functioning autism and could hardly verbalize properly.

I apologize if this turned into a bit of a rant, but if by some possibility we end up with Trump picking a humanoid naked mole rat like Scott for his VP pick, I'm not gonna be happy. Well, except for maybe the irony of a guy with such notable hair as Trump getting a running mate who is as bald as Professor X.

Have you any dreams you'd like to sell?

Disgusting Clinton campaign E-mail from today smearing Sanders by invoking the Sandy Hook victims:

In 2007, Senator Ted Kennedy made a valiant effort to pass immigration reform — I stood with him and voted for that bill. Senator Sanders voted against it.

This week, families from Sandy Hook are in court suing the manufacturer of the gun that killed their children, challenging the law that gives gun-makers legal immunity. I voted against that law. Senator Sanders voted for it.

And right now, Senator Sanders is running a campaign based largely on a single issue — but I don’t think we’re a single-issue country. We need a president who will break down the barriers facing all Americans, from economic inequality to systemic racism, sexism, and homophobia.

And more troubling updates on E-mailgate:

U.S. spy agencies have told Congress that Hillary Clinton's home computer server contained some emails that should have been treated as "top secret" because their wording matched sections of some of the government's most highly classified documents, four sources familiar with the agency reports said.

The two reports are the first formal declarations by U.S. spy agencies detailing how they believe Clinton violated government rules when highly classified information in at least 22 email messages passed through her unsecured home server.

[...]

However, the agency reports found some emails included passages that closely tracked or mirrored communications marked "top secret," according to the sources, who all requested anonymity.

[...]

Under the law and government rules, U.S. officials and contractors may not transmit any classified information - not only documents - outside secure, government-controlled channels.

[...]

One source said the reports identified some information in messages on Clinton's server that came from human sources, such as confidential CIA informants, and some from technical systems, such as spy satellites or electronic eavesdropping.

[...]

Two of the sources told Reuters that one of the reports on the emails came from the CIA. Three sources said the other report came from the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency (NGA), which analyzes U.S. spy satellite intelligence.

Spy agencies say Clinton emails closely matched top secret documents

Attorney General Loretta Lynch declined Wednesday to discuss how she would make a decision about whether to prosecute Democratic presidential candidate and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton over classified information found on her private email server.

However, Lynch did say the investigation and the Justice Department's review of the matter would follow the usual process and procedure for such matters.

"This will be conducted as every other case and we will review all the facts and all the evidence and come to an independent conclusion as to how to best handle it," Lynch said during a House Appropriations Committee hearing Wednesday morning.

Hadn't it already been established that what ever she had wasn't top secret when she had it, so it wasn't a crime for her to have it? Or am I misremembering?

That's an obfuscation. Only Clinton herself and her camp has made that argument. The law is very explicit: As Secretary of State, Clinton should have known that certain correspondences were by nature "born secret."

Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders has finally begun efforts to assemble a team of foreign policy advisors following weeks of criticism from Hillary Clinton that his campaign lacks the kind of trusted experts necessary to inform a future commander-in-chief.

According to sources close to the campaign, Sanders has tapped Bill French to help craft the Vermont senator’s foreign policy messaging and coordinate with outside advisors and experts. French, a policy analyst at the National Security Network, a nonprofit policy group dedicated to building “a strong progressive national security and counter conservative spin,” has testified on Capitol Hill on various proposals for combatting the Islamic State militant group in Iraq and Syria. French’s testimony last March warned lawmakers about the risks of an overly-broad war authorization against the Sunni extremist group that could be used in unexpected ways by a future U.S. president. He also raised doubts about the Obama administration’s soaring rhetoric about being able to “degrade and ultimately destroy” the Islamic State.

French has written broadly about U.S. defense policy and its modern history, including extensive analyses on the capabilities of the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter and a catalogue of every authorization for the use of military force (AUMF) the United States Congress has ever passed.

The use of the phrase "should have been treated as" shows that the contents weren't and possibly aren't classified, just that some anonymous sources belive that they should have been, still not seeing any fire to go with all this smoke.

Which also by association undermines any legitimate point your thing about the Clinton campaign playing dirty might have had.

If you provide a hundred sources over the few weeks you've been here and they're all about how one person is a total shitlord, you don't "just provide the sources". You have an agenda.

And?

Said person is a public official who may have indulged in what is technically a federal criminal act. I think that's warranted posting that we don't snuff out if it actually does go somewhere, and it sounds like there may be something questionable here. Just because everyone else did it doesn't mean she should get away with it if she got caught with her hand in the cookie jar, red handed.

Or must we become the "Hillary Clinton never did anything wrong" echo chamber?

And he is citing papers that aren't crackpot fringe publications. Or is Reuters now too Wingnutty?

I am not saying that she didn't do what Owl linked, or any of the gazillion other things he linked. Nor am I doubting the claim's credibility. I AM saying that he can't claim to "just be posting the sources" if every source is meant to lead us to one conclusion.
