The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Basically, if there was a latino caucusgoer within the GOP, he was already likely to vote for what most of the GOP caucus voters were voting for, so what is the surprise here?
The mainstream media punditry has consistently predicted that Cruz and Rubio (being Latino) would act as a 'firewall' against Trump in Nevada, Florida, and other largely Latino states.

This proves Cruz/Rubio have no significant advantage with that demographic. There's the surprise—although many of us saw it coming.

Well, the nine percent of them that made up the caucusgoers made them pretty insignificant even if they all voted for Cruz or Rubio.

It means that Trump is the overwhelming favorite to win the GOP nomination by popular vote. Nothing that Cruz or Rubio do seems to be making a difference, and the narratives of evangelical voters picking Cruz or Hispanic voters picking Rubio due to solidarity seem to be false.

Maybe latinos are not partisan idiots by race/origin country, and instead, are partisan idiots by political party affiliation, go figure.

I mean, the mere suggestion that the Republican GOP would even allow the average latino to vote in their caucuses is kinda silly. Or am I wrong there and it is real easy to get into the caucus of stuff?

Idiocy aside, the narrative seems not to be that Republican Hispanics will avoid Trump because of his rhetoric about expelling Mexicans, but rather that they represent that demographic group that also wants the Mexicans kicked out, since they got here legitimately and worked hard while all those illegals are freeloading.

There's also probably the same underlying sentiment that government and politicians are not serving their needs, so they want an outsider to come in and shake up the system.

I literally asked what was the point in bringin up the news though, as if it were something new or unexpected? Was something else new, or expected? Do you want to hear that political pundits are pretty much idiots, especially if they generalize an entire race? What do you want outta that?

Aren't most GOP hispanics NOT of Mexican descent? What would a Cuban or a Columbian care if Mexicans got crapped on?

Because the average GOP voter isn't going to be able to tell the difference and they're likely to get caught up in the avalanche of racism?

[up][up][up][up]A lot of people tend to gawk at the idea of any Hispanic (or black person) voting for any Republican ever so these things turn into news even when they shouldn't be.

[up][up]Eh, dunno about that. It's a GOP faux pas to mistaken a Cuban for a Mexican, since the former are romanticized a lot in Republican dogma.

Sarcasm aside, the way Trump and his ilk talk about Mexican immigrants is essentially a catch-all term for any and all migrants from Latin American nations. It's kind of like a 19th century European calling all Asians "Chinamen". In one of the earlier GOP debates, Rubio even tried to point out that most illegal immigrants to the US from South America aren't even Mexican, something that absolutely no one seemed interested in.

Still, it could backfire if the Senate lets this go through and the guy turns out to be another conservative who votes with the other four almost all the time.
