Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Trump is now questioning Rubio's eligibility to be president. Its generally accepted that he was born in Miami to Cuban parents (who later became American citizens) but that's not going to stop the Donald.

Wow, Trump wants to win the nomination by default, having disqualified all the other candidates for technical reasons. He really is not used to fair fights, is he? I'm no fan of Rubio (or Cruz for that matter), but Trump is trying to poison the race in a way that I've never seen before.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"I think it's all bluster. Current polling says he doesn't really need to bust down Cruz and Rubio, it just feeds into the Birther image, which is the brand that he really pushed into the spotlight in 2009, as well as the general anti-immigrant anti-hispanic line.
But Trump should come out of Super Tuesday in a very dominant position. Most of the Super Tuesday states reward delegates proportionally, so even in states where he won't win (like Texas), he'll still get more strength.
We're all Africans originally.
But yeah, Trump isn't trying to disqualify directly, but spread enough doubt that there's a bit too much Canadian and Cuban in Cruz and Rubio's blood that. You just can't trust them. They might not actually be legal. Best to avoid sketchy guys with funny surnames. Vote for Trump Steaks.
About that "birther"-mongering by Trump. Based on some polls in 2009, there was a fair amount - almost half to one quarter in some surveys - of Republicans polled which believed Obama was born outside of the US. My suspicion is that the birther theory is sufficiently widespread that one could use it as a campaign topic there.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanAll I can think of with the "We're all from Africa originally" statement is that white supremacist who was told, on live TV, that he was 14% sub-Saharan African. He immediately chalked it up to "Statistical Noise", but everyone knew that was BS - the black woman seated next to him laughing her ass off is the best part of that clip.
"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"Only half of Americans believe the nation has the strongest Military on Earth.
Even weirder, 2/3rd's continue to support the hegemony, this probably mean that "America Fuck Yeah" is prevalent far beyond white Southerners.
And yet more strange, more American were confident about our strength during the Bush presidency, yes even as we were globally despised and fighting a loosing war in Iraq and Afghanistan, though at least for the confidence at the end we had the fact that the US was perceived as having emerged victories after the surge.
Some of this may be recent technological advances made by Russia and China, but the article attributes it to Republicans constantly saying we are loosing, and Democrats, due to their reluctance to use force, not playing up our strength.
Hawkishness on foreign policy is where the GOP will emerge from the abyss, especially in the event of a Sanders presidency. His social and economic programs may very well succeed and be popular, but I expect Putin and Xi to run rough shot over him in ways they would never even do to Obama, who both held in contempt as a "weakling."
I Bring Doom, and a bit of gloom, but mostly gloom.
For people unfamiliar with our actual military capabilities to think we don't have the most powerful? Unsurprising. We've spent the last eight years with Faux News leading a trumpet charge to play up every single failure overseas, to decry Iraq and Afghanistan as military failures surpassing Vietnam, to play Benghazi as some kind of furious Zerg Rush that flattened our brave soldiers into pavement smears. Given that one percent (barely) of the country has served in the military, why would they know that our actual capabilities in terms of ships sailing, planes flying, and guns shooting, is pretty close to the same as it was 15 years ago?
They think he's not strong in the real way, huh? That's hilarious, in a very pitiful way. Doubly funny as the GOP keep screaming that he's a brutal, oppressive, fearsome tyrant. Who knows exactly what he's doing.

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.If Trump is still playing the "birther" card, Bill Mahr is still waiting for Trump to submit to DNA testing, to determine if he was sired by an orange-haired orangutan.
It's an old joke, I admit, but since Trump isn't getting any new material either...

This Space Intentionally Left Blank.

I've always maintained that King of the Hill is a documentary.
Oh really when?
